The Albert is currently undergoing change of management. There is a young couple, Vikki and Charlie, who own the pub and have been working very hard over the past few weeks sprucing up the place. Can’t wait for their relaunch party on September 10th. Free buffet and live music! :) Currently, a group and I go to the Albert on Wednesday night. It is the venue for our Philosophy in Pubs meeting, and they have been very accommodating and welcoming to us. We’ve sat in a large back room a few times(which is now undergoing some redecoration), but have also moved into the main part of the pub and to one of the side rooms in front. It’s actually quite nice! And the location near the Southport train station is so convenient for our group. They aren’t doing food yet, but I believe they plan to sometime in the future. For now, drinks!

And so I get onto a pub that will always have a special place in my heart. From the age of seventeen(and a half) onwards, The Albert was the ONLY place my friends and I would go of a Friday and Saturday night. At first it was because they were the only place that would let us drink there quietly in the corner even when we weren’t quite old enough to drink yet. However, once we were old enough we carried on going there, becoming the owners’ adopted sons and virtually the only people under thirty-five in there. As time went on, we became on first name terms with the owners, the regulars, even the Saturday night DJ(The Streets was my speciality). We even went there for the owners’ last night as everyone drank the bar dry, a night that was as eventful as ever. Unfortunately, things changed over time(the owners, us wanting to hang out with people our own age) and we stopped going there eventually. We returned occasionally but it seemed like the place had lost its spark. It has recently come under new management and has been refurbished as a more respectable, friendly pub that offers a cosy drinking atmosphere and very pleasant pub food. The beer in there isn’t too bad and the regulars are crazy as ever, but if you fancy a quiet drink in one of Southport’s more eccentric pubs then give it a go. It gets four stars from me alone for the excellent memories it’s given me in the past.
