Southend United FC

I love the way the top part of my gf looks, but I like her Southend even more. I’d like to be United with it regularly.
First-​Hand Experience: Like the stadium, I expected to give this team a 2 or 3 because I never liked them. However visiting the stadium made me realize how intensely the fans support this team and what a truly great lower league club it is. I can’t wait to go back and watch them live at home next year. I’ve seen them live away from home already, at Oxford, and their travelling fans were fantastic.
So based on my personal experiences I have to put them as a 4.
I don’t have much love for Southend. They’re not quite old enough to be from the 1800s, they’ve never been in the Prem, they play in boring white and blue colours, the fact that they are the Shrimpers is one of the few redeeming qualities about them, especially since, and I’ve said it before, we don’t use the word Shrimp in England, we use Prawn. But that’s beside the point.
A lot of the reviews listed here are for the stadium, which I am creating a separate listing for. If anyone at Unilocal is reading please move them over to the stadium listing. It’s a pretty historic venue.
As for the team, well I suppose the fact that they are called the shrimpers and there is so much love for them among the fans, means I’ll have to bump then up to a 4, but I don’t do it because I want to.

As others have said, the ground is fairly old but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. If you want to go to a flashy new stadium you’ll pay the price of going to a bigger club.
If you’re lookign for local football, in a reasonable sized stadium with a good atmostphere then this is the place to go.
As with any sport, obviously the success of the team can vary, but that should have no bearing on your opinion on the ground.
It can be a bit pricey if you want to take a family, but the club do hold special offers and events regularly so keep an eye on their website.

Old stadium, needs replacing. Quite expensive especially if going as a family. Look out for special family days. Loyal fan base. Good atmosphere.

Seems to be a waste of money going to see them this season! The club hasn’t seemed to grasp the fact fans want leg room or that they want to actually see a proper game of football. Kids enjoy the day out and they generally cost about £5, adults however are well in the region of £20 and thats just the cheap seats! Would only recommend going if it was a big game. Never seem to have the 1^st team fit and the players they do have are very overrated. Believe it or not I am a Blues fan, but from what I have seen this season it doesn’t seem to be worth my time or effort. Atmosphere is not what it used to be and none of the fans seem to sing, only at away games. Could be seen as a reason why the team isn’t so good, but highly unlikely.

A good way of getting your little ones into football is by going to Southend Utd, it is such a good atmosphere.
I take my old man with me and more recently my 4 year old.
The grounds are conviniently placed along the main road into Southend and can be easily reached by bus or trains going Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria, get off at Prittlewell and follow the crowds about a 10 minute walk.
The tickets are resonably priced and you usually get a decent game of football for your money.
The only downside is getting out after the game.

I guess I’m a little biased here, as I’ve loved Southend United since I was 12, but I’ll review the place anyway.
Roots Hall is a dilapidated old stadium, in fact the oldest purpose-​built stadium for football in the country, and it shows a little. Howeve, I call that ‘character’, and love being so close to the pitch.
With mascots and cheerleaders, Southend prides itself on being a ‘family club’ and it’s well worth bringing the kids to the family stand, although some of the language can be a littlecolourful.
The views from the West are often blocked by posts, which can be inconvenient, and the food is, to put it bluntly, terrible.
If you’ve never been before, go — but eat before you get there!

Moving location soon, Southend United FC is a great stadium, and a great team, formerly featuring Welsh national footballer Freddie Eastwood.
Recently Southend United were relegated from the Champions League after facing off against too many former Premier League division teams and finding them too tough, however, they’ve prooven time and again that the First Division is their domain, and they will generally be amongst the top few ranking teams in the division.

I would like to say that my husband has a Season Ticket and has done for years but I would like to see him come home more happy more often. Considering the amount of money the players earn — compared to the supporters paypackets — could they not find it in their hearts to try a bit harder and throw themselves into the game a bit more. They tend to put their heads down when 1 – 0 down and that’s it. So come on lads 0– for me and the old man — try and keep your heads up and beat the opposition! ;-)

South-​end on sea begins with the longest road of shops, markets and miniature malls with interesting and vibrant products ranging from household goods to sunglasses and flip-​flops. A few shops are of common knowledge around the UK but are often selling the same products miles cheaper as it is on the coast of Essex.
After the overwhelming experience of the hall of shops, if that didn’t tire you out or meet your interests there are a range of restaurants situated along the border of the beach, your famous fish and chips and also exquisite Chinese and Thai options to suffocate all your taste buds.
For the more boisterous and energetic personalities, there is the fantastic amusement park; Adventure Island sandwiched between the peer and other amusing family activities such as Crazy Golf and Aquariums.

Roots Hall is a timely reminder that football can still live in the dark ages and be fun. Located right in the heart of the town, the all seated ground is small and tightly packed. From any vantage point you are close to the action and the metal roofs trap the noise and atmosphere of the fans nicely. I have been twice for midweek games and the noise is always raucous and fun.

Directions by Car
From M25 take Junction 29 and follow the A127 to Southend. Continue towards the town centre, through the lights near to the Bell Pub. At the next roundabout turn right (3^rd turning), continuing on the A127. The ground is on the right just past the next traffic lights.
Directions by Train:
The nearest station is Prittlewell, on the London Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria line run by one great eastern. It is about five minutes walk from the east entrance to the ground in Victoria Avenue.
