A good friend of mind recommended the PoP a few years ago and since then we have thoroughly enjoyed everything about this little gem. The staff have always been very friendly, the food is always very well cooked and the wine /port list is outstanding. Even for a quiet drink at the small but homely bar, it’s a great place to visit. I always recommend this restaurant to friends and family and have never once had negative feedback from anyone. Additionally, the unique setting is part of the experience which gives off a very homely /warm feeling at any time of year. A true gem and definitely worth a visit. In our opinion, this is by far the Best restaurant in Southend!

People rave about this place all the time, is it really that good. The food is good but i feel could be better, i dont understand why there is sand on the floor, always get it in my shoes. Very random place!

I am torn about recommending this place to Qypers, purely because it is a hidden gem, and I’d like it to stay that way! From the outside, Pipe of Port looks like it might be the entrance to a town centre boozer of dubious patronage. But this delectable little basement bar is quite the opposite. My apprehension at being led down into the darkness by the boyf was swiftly replaced with coos of delight, as I noted a flagstone floor covered in sawdust, twinkling candles and row upon row of wine bottles neatly stowed in their racks. We had booked a cancellation table just 90 minutes prior to dining, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We were led to our intimate table, and served swiftly. As you can imagine, dining in a wine cellar, the selection of vino is pretty impressive and comprehensive. Food included a wood pigeon breast starter, cooked to tender rare perfection. Steak was equally well delivered. My favourite restaurant so far in the Southend borough area. I will be going back!

Excellent food. Good prices. Very good service. Can take their excellent pies home for your own freezer.

I thoroughly recommend a visit to this fabulous wine bar/restuarant. I have been visiting the Pipe of Port for 20 years — they have never let me down in all those years. The choice of food is great, with a nice mix of specials added to the usual menu. The choice of wine is too much for me — the house red is more than nice enough for me.

Pipe of Port is the only nice wine bar in Southend — Staff is quite knowledgeable and owner is a Master of Wine — There is obviously a large selection of wines although nothing you cannot find elsewhere which was a bit of a surprise. Food is simple but very good — shame the menu has not changed for years(mainly rustic food and pies!). Not cheap if you fancy yourself as a wine buff!

Pipe of Port is a fantastic restaurant, tucked away in a cellar off Southend High Street; you could easily miss it if you weren’t looking for it. It’s very cute with saw dust on the floor, and little old fashioned tables and chairs. They do a fantastic variety of pies, especially the trawler(sea food) pie and the chicken and chestnut pie; I always agonise over which to choose! The restaurant is very tasty and classy compared to some ofSouthend’s other offerings. There’s also a brilliant selection of wines, as it also doubles as a wine bar. Overall, a great choice if you’re downSouthend way.
