In my opinion, the best fish and chips in the north east bar none. I do prefer the restaurant to the takeaway as they seem to taste better(maybe it is just me?) besides, a breadroll and cuppa along with mushy pease makes the meal. The takeaway chips are great and it’s the lack of grease that makes them standout for me. Their fish, is the best anywhere in the vicinity. Just have a look at how they source will tell you why. Alongside the Magpie Café in Whitby for quality.

As Fish and Chip shops go, this surely has to be the Gold Standard. Winners of more awards than you can shake a stick at, including for their commitment to sustainable fishing, this is about as good as it gets. Chips from real potatoes, fish cooked to order even served with a piece of lemon and they can even tell you which boat caught the fish you’re about to eat! If there is a downside it’s that their fish are at the high end of the price scale, but then again you’re getting something that is head and shoulders above your average chippy. Join the queue and you’ll find it’s well worth it.

Colmans has been voted best fish and chips in the UK a couple of times, and it’s highly recommended in the travel guide… that only normally makes me suspicious. But… on this occasion I stand corrected — it was so good that on a weekend visit to Newcastle, we stopped twice at Colmans! The staff are lovely and very friendly, and it’s got a local fish and chip shop/restaurant feel. But the best part is the special scampi and chips, which are made from real langoustines — big, big scampi, with very sweet langoustines. My only tip is to make sure you order their special Colmans scampi and chips and not just«scampi and chips» because as I sadly discovered, this gets you a portion of regular scampi and chips. The fish is good, as are the fish cakes, but really the winner is the Colmans scampi and chips… definitely make a pilgrimage to Colmans! I will be back next time I am in the area, or I may just make a trip especially!

Awesome fish and chips — the best I’ve had, and usually make a family visit here around Christmas/New Year. Bit more pricey than your usual fish and chip shop, but the portion and quality are fantastic. Seems to have been going for a long time and has a commitment to sustainable fishing, which is a good thing given the state of the the North Sea. Can get pretty busy.

Coleman’s located on Ocean rd in South Shields the main shop fronted walk to the sea front. The first thing that hots you about colemans is the queue that is always formed in the shop, you then while notice the posters telling you the awards that the place has won in the various magazines. As soon as you walk in you are asked to order any fish you want as all the fish is cooked fresh to order and is not just made and placed in the heagting cabinets waiting for someone to buy them. The chips in my opinion are the best tasting chips in south shields as well as the fresh tasting fish, there is quite a variety of fish to chose from as well. If you are looking for a slower and more relaxed time they do have a resteraunt next door to the takeaway and the food and friendly service will always make you come back for more.

As everyone else has said, Colmans fish and chips are the best I have ever tasted… in South Shields and elsewhere in the county. They have won numerous awarding including one from the BBC, so they can’t all be wrong :) They have also served their fish and chips to make famous stars and politicians, including Tony Blair, David Milliband and numerous others. Photos of these stars can be seen on their website which is;
As well as the takeaway they have a restaurant which they serve all their menu. If I remember correctly, it is £5.60 for fish and chips but one box is usually ample to fill the average person up, and they are well worth the money in terms of quality. Definitely recommended by me!
