The Bear is the main pub in Bearwood, dominating the corner of Bearwood Road and Three Shires Oak Road. I first came to start going in there as it was my girlfriend’s local. It’s not the greatest place in the world, but it’s more than alright. They stock the usual, wide variety of drinks and they also do food. A word of warning with the food, it’s cheap and you get good value for money but remember that the unhealthier the food you order, the nicer it’ll probably be. Upstairs is a really nice old-fashioned function room which is woefully under-used as it would make an excellent venue for putting bands or nights on. There’s a quiz on Sunday nights which is a good laugh and televisions constantly showing Sky Sports News. There’s also a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights when the pub is open until the early hours.

A typical old fashioned pub, the Bear attracts a large majority of locals who live near Bearwood, as the most dominant pub on the high street. Using the lure of sports and this summers Euro 2012 as the main attraction, the pub serves fairly cheap pints although the quality leaves somewhat to be desired. Since being in this job, It’s almost gave me a licence to explore areas I would of otherwise avoided, and the Bear certainly falls under that category. As i previously said, a fairly local mans pub, the atmosphere is somewhat flat, although I can imagine that changing when England play France on Monday. Regardless, I won’t be heading back for the game, with plenty of other, more pleasant bars showing the game!

Once well known as a music venue with bands playing in the upstairs room The Bear is also famous for hosting comedy nights in the 1980s headed by a certain Frank Skinner(although there’s a few pubs in the area who’ve made this claim). These days it’s very much a pool and ‘big screen sports’ type of pub with offers on fairly bog standard lagers and bitter. Popular with an older clientele in the day it’s reportedly a little more lively in the evenings and perhaps not somewhere you’d head if you were desperate for a decent mojito and a range of artisan bar snacks. Conversely I wouldn’t really head there for a quiet night out either but I guess if you want to see sport and you like playing pool then this is the place to do it in Bearwood.

Good local pub. Nice food, friendly staff. Shows all the sports with lots of tv’s. Avoid Friday nights as it’s abit of a youth hostel unless you are under 20. Lots of eating places outside and local buses stop outside and run till mid night.
