Great local pub with a history. Used to be a brothel many moons ago. Now has lots of rooms and character. Great barmaid giving local knowledge

Interesting pub with lots of little rooms to investigate. I love drinking in places like this, but the beer range didn’t quite match. Went for Jennings Worlds Greatest, which was just average. Restricted by Marstons. Pub since 1780(when it was called The Greyhound).

I’ve been going to this pub for about 30 years now and it has hardly changed. Sadly, it’s not quite what it once was and they don’t serve Bass anymore, which is a really sad break with tradition. But it is still worth a visit as it is just about the best old pub in Shrewsbury, tucked away in the very heart of the town. The pub gets is name from the town’s coat of arms, which used to be referred to as ‘the loggerheads’(a ‘lubberhead’ being the old name given to a leopard’s head), as it depicts the heads of three leopards; when I started going to the pub, it was still known as ‘The Shrewsbury Arms’ and the crest was proudly displayed above the entrance; but to us it has always been ‘The Loggers’. If you find yourself here one day, and you like real old pubs, check it out.

My first visit for lunch today and I was immediately struck by the apparently unspoilt nature of this town centre boozer. A few small rooms, the television restricted to the bar, and everything clean and tidy. Ringwood Fortyniner was our chosen ale which slipped down very well and my discerning wife alternated between J2O and coffee. The coffee must have been good because she commented favourably upon it. Our lunch was modestly-priced, well-served and nutritious and, speaking for myself, the ham, egg, chips and beans toasted delicious. We’ll be back.

The loggerhead is a unique and funny place, when walking around you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve just stepped back in time. With not a flat steady floor in the building and signs saying No Ladies on the entrance to a small alcove it truly is a remarkable place. The owner is a great guy with endless knowledge on the building and the location. The pub was included in the film A Christmas Carol as the film company didn’t need to make it look old! As stated before a very busy pub with a brilliant atmosphere, if you are only visiting Shrewsbury for a short time it is well worth a visit.

This isn’t a pub you’d expect to be particularly popular since it is tucked away from the main area of drinking establishments in Shrewsbury town centre. And yet, every time I’ve visited on a Friday or Saturday evening, it has always been filled to the rafters. Since The Loggerheads tends to be heaving on a weekend evening, you probably won’t be surprised to have to queue a while to be served but it’s a cracking atmosphere full of interesting and friendly people who are sure to make you feel welcome and at home. It’s not a trendy pub but it has a traditional and simple vibe to it. If you’re looking for an evening rubbing shoulders with the locals and enjoying a pint or two, then you can’t go far wrong with The Loggerheads.

If you’re looking for an unspoilt, old world pub, this is the best(and unbelievably maybe the only) place in town. Really interesting old building, with lots of rooms, and lots of politically incorrect charm. The landlord once reassured me that the place would never be renovated, decorated, or otherwise messed about with.(Some relief but I imagine developers would love to sink their rotten teeth into it). Anyway, the beer is good(Marstons and Banks) and I think they still serve lemonade from those glass bottles, that you get 5p for the empties. FYI A loggerhead is an iron tool with a large bulbous head used, when heated, to heat tar, and is also used in the expression to be at loggerheads But in this case The Loggerheads is the name given to the three lion’s heads depicted on the arms of the town.
