Myself and a colleague stayed for 2 nights at the Thatched Cottage and found it to be very pleasant. I did not read the reviews before staying or I would have been put off, but I am glad I didn’t as we experienced none of the issues previous reviewers have. Upon arrival, we were greeted and shown to our rooms — I had a superior room it seems. The room was bright and airy and very welcoming. The bathroom was big enough to park 4 cars in — it was enormous! Very clean and tidy. The only problem I found with my room was that the halogen spot lights kept going on and off. The staff were very obliging and came to check them out but it seems that when they get too hot they switch themselves off — I’d rather that than they had exploded all over the room! I had an issue with the lock on my door too but the girl on duty came to show me what I was doing wrong with no grumbling! The bed was very comfortable, I wish I could have taken the pillows home! The shower was great — the showerhead was the size of a dustbin lid! Dinner was fantastic — the food is marvellous. The handmade tortellini is a great starter and the parmesan encrusted chicken was divine. The saltmarsh lamb I had on the second evening was the best lamb I’ve ever tasted. Top marks for the kitchen! Breakfast was also tasty and plentiful. The Thatched Cottage is not situated in downtown Shepton Mallet and our taxi from Bristol Airport did not know where it was, so perhaps best to check out before you go! Also, there is nothing of note in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, so take snacks/magazines! There is a petrol station about 10 minutes walk away if you are desperate! The main highlight of my trip was seeing the 20 foot tall Babycham deer outside the brewery on the way back to the airport(about 45 mins drive away) and seeing a goat standing on the edge of a cliff as we drove through a gorge. The staff are efficient but not overly friendly but I would have no hesitation in staying here again.

We went here for Sunday lunch a few months ago and enjoyed it, so as it’s a convenient meeting place between Trowbridge and Yeovil we arranged to meet some friends here for a catch up and dinner… It was great to have time to talk … but the offer of a table would have been nice… We asked. we got menus and sat down and started to catch up… it was great to have some time to talk but an offer to take an order would be nice… we had to ask… 30 minutes… we carried on talking and watched other meals come out it was great to talk about things we had missed… like our starters… we asked they turned up… I have to say the Wood Pigeon and Chorizo was great well cooked and an imaginative mix of flavours… We carried on talking wondering what the mains would bring… and more to the point who would bring them and WHEN… 2 hours after we arrived we got our mains … I had chosen the Monk fish on «crushed potato» the potato was cold so it went back… when it came back the potato was scalding but the fish was swimming in water on the plate and the oil was floating on it… the so called crunchy crumb topping was now a soggy mess… To give the place its due they did take the price off the bill but Accidentally slipped a carafe of wine on in the place of a beer… What started as a promising meal with a good ambiance ended up with poor service and disappointing food… the 2 stars are for the starters which were good… but try it at your will…
