My current curry mission is to find establishments that serve their wares on a mid week lunchtime in the Sheffield area. Initially I thought this was going to be a rather difficult task. Most known Sheffield restaurants tend to cater for the end of night lager lout or the 10 bob millionaires who enjoy the pomp and pretence which is often accompanied by a fake fawning servility which does no one any good. However there is the odd oasis in this barren desert. After a few pints of real ale in The Kelham Island Tavern and The Fat Cat we were ready for our now customary mid-afternoon curry. We visited Zaika, which is located behind Karachi Stores just off of Attercliffe Road, in the East End of Sheffield. The restaurant opens 7 days a week from 11 in the morning whilst 8pm at night. We visited at approximately 2pm. It is only a small restaurant, having seating for just 16 people. It also has a relatively small menu. My view is that it is better to do a few things really well than to do lots of dishes averagely or even poorly. The restaurant is unlicensed and has easy wheelchair access for disabled diners. My friend and I both ordered the same dish, a Chicken Karahi, Apna style. All Karahi dishes here are accompanied with a Nan or 2 Roti’s or Rice, all for £5.50 ! We ordered one of the dishes with rice and the second dish with 2 Roti’s and also ordered an additional 2 Roti’s. This meant that we had a main dish, half a portion of rice and 2 Roti’s each. The waiter gave us a good-sized complimentary side salad, yoghurt and a chilli dip, excellent. The icing on the cake was the waiter noting that we had finished the side salad half way through our meal and then asking us if we would like extra salad. How good is that? Unheard of in these parts ! The main dish was excellent, nicely spiced with a copious amount of good quality breast meat and deserved 8⁄10. The Roti’s were the biggest we have ever seen and were of good quality. I bought a selection of barfi to take home. The restaurant carried a rather impressive range of authentic Indian deserts, which is a far cry from most South Yorkshire Indian restaurants, which do not carry any at all! In addition to the Barfir the Zaika serves Faloda, Kulfi, Rasmali, Ghulab Jaman, Gujrela, and Kheer. If you like The Kashmir Curry Centre, Mangla and Kebabish then consider giving this place a go, you’ll enjoy it. If you don’t like the 3 above named restaurants then you won’t like Zaika either. Your loss ! Chicken Karahi with either a Nan, 2 Roti’s or Rice £5.50 Tandoori Roti 40p, Boiled Rice £1.00, Pilau Rice £1.20 Green Salad 75p, Yoghurt Sauce 30p, Chilli Sauce 30p(complimentary with our meal, 2 lots of !)
