Busy pub, even on a Monday evening. Not particularly cosy, although this could be partially due to the cocky group of self promoters I ended up in close proximity to. Acorn thirst degree, brewed especially for the pub thank you please, was a pretty decent beer.

I met some friends here at the start of a night out and was surprised how quiet it was early Saturday evening. I’d been in there before when it was a staff place rather than a pub and the décor hadn’t changed much. We tried to order a couple of beers but it seemed everything was off so we ended up having a bottle of beer out of the fridge! Prices were reasonable though. We sat outside in the beer garden which was small but large enough for the small number of customers in there. The toilets could do with a revamp plus extending as there is only 2 ladies loos!

The University Arms is situated close to the University of Sheffield, but you’re unlikely to find it full of over-excited 18 year olds — it tends to be frequented by mature and postgraduate students, and University staff and lecturers. It serves real ale and there’s an ever-changing range of guest beers. The bar staff are always happy to let you try a bit of an unfamiliar beer. It won the Sheffield CAMRA Pub Of The Month award in October 2008, and they have occasional beer tasting nights. It can get quite busy on a Friday night. Prices are reasonable, service is quick, and there’s a pleasant beer garden out the back. Recommended!
