This is a lovely old pub with many sights of interest. I particularly enjoyed the ticking of the big Grandfather clock, with its large pendulum. Reminded me of sitting in my Gran’s lounge as a nipper! Worth dwelling for 3 ales. All good. I’d like to thank, in no particular order, the Blue beers brewery for Brown Street and Shake Rattle + Roll and Hop Studio for their White Rose.

Having recently moved in around the corner, we took great delight in realising that The Shakespeare have now re-opened with a definite focus on good, quality real ales. Prices are cheap with a pint of local Abbeydale, Deception, coming in at only £2.10 so a round of 3 drinks coming in at less than £7 count me in on becoming a regular! THe pub is very traditional and all the better for, an almost maze of rooms with(at the moment at least) a massive christmas tree at the centre. So yeah, definitely recommend this pub.

The Shakespeare, a proper old-style coaching inn in the industrial quarter of Sheffield, has recently been taken over by the former owner of top Sheffield independent record shop Forever Changes. It retains its slightly shabby, unpretentious look, but has a new quirkiness which makes it one of the best real ale pubs in Sheffield. As you’d expect given its owner, the place puts on some cracking gigs in the upstairs room(and in the summer, hosts a contemporary folk festival Splayd, upstairs and in the large beer garden). Music nights are lovingly curated, and you’re likely to see some really good local, national and sometimes international talent before they hit the big time. Be warned though: the pub’s not very big, and it can get rammed on these nights. The owners clearly love a bit of quality booze, and you can get real ales(including local award-winners from the Kelham Island brewery), an extensive fine wine list plus quality spirits, all at pretty good prices. They’re happy to offer advice as well. A pool table, a darts board, board games and reading material make it a great place to spend a wet weekend, but if you need to venture outside then they also have a sort of an honesty bucket by the door where you can borrow & drop-off umbrellas. All-in-all, it’s a great little boozer with a generous spirit and a friendly, mixed crowd.

Despite its rough and ready appearance this is actually a great little place. It doesn’t try to look polished or snazzy, instead serving a good range of beers and having great people behind the bar. There is a pool room and a good space out theback where a few bands have played at summer events. Up some small stairs there is a room where live bands can play gigs. It tends to atttract a very friendly crowd and puts on msuic that’s almosy always worth a look.
