I used to use the Sandygate branch a few years back and it was generally ok. However the Ecclesall and Millhouses branch are not hygeinic enough. Having worked in the Restaurant and Food industry for 15 years previously I can be a bit particular when it comes to food hygeine, and freshly made food like sandwiches and deli etc are at high risk of cross contamination and bacteria. For example they do not use any plastic gloves to handle the food, they use the same knives to cut meat sandwiches as vegetarian sandwiches, quite often the staff members may have been cleaning and wiping surfaces and not washing their hands afterwards before handling other food, also i have seen a member of staff picking her nose!!! disgusting! The produce that Roses makes however is excellent-fresh bread, cakes-make sure they use tongue instruments to pick them up with!

Roses the Bakers does what it says on the tin. It’s a bakers, and the only exciting element of this is the fact that it has meal deals for anyone looking for a cheap — but bland — lunch. You can buy a sandwich, drink and crisps for a price cheaper than most cafes and food shops. You can also pick up fresh(ish) bread and other basic food for the household, all of which is pretty cheap. Make sure you ask for any special offers they have on on that day.

Whenever I’m visiting my nearby dentist I go in this bakery. The cakes are amazing and they always have a good selection in. They also do lovely bread rolls but these are quite expensive. The staff are ok although can be a little shirty with you if you take a while to choose your goods
