It’s surprising how many young people in Sheffield, as well as South Yorkshire, do not know the whereabouts of South Yorkshire’s most largest, free for all, open space parkland known throughout the world as the Peak District National Park. Most of the Peak District National Park is situated in Derbyshire, but the North Eastern corner of the Park is situated within the West Boundary of the City of Sheffield. The Park consists mainly of open moorland, where large flocks of privately owned sheep are allowed to roam and graze freely. Scattered about you can find outcrops of high gritstone crags, the most famous of these being«Stanage Edge» where world famous mountain climbers have come along to practise their climbing techneques before attempting to climb such mountains as Everest and K2. Quaint little homesteads such as Ringinglow and Fox House can be found within the Park, at these locations you can obtain food and drinks at the local public house. The terminal for the local buses from Sheffield Interchange come to these locations as well, but be warned, the buses do not run regular. So, next time it’s a school holiday and your kids are complaining they’re bored and have nothing to do, visit Sheffield’s part of the Peak District National Park. It’s a great day out for all the family. I certainly recommend it.
