Isle of Wight Zoo

Home of tvs tiger island. I think the animals were well cared for but there was only tigers and lemurs but there was a couple of animals but not much. To adopt an animal is really cheap and the activitys are fun and i’ve learn’t lots about animals. =]

This was the first time I’ve visited in many years and what an improvement! Animals looked healthy and well cared for. Would have been even better if the enclosures were larger but considering the conditions that some of these animals have been rescued from, it must paradise. Good facilites including nice café and picnic area. No much opportunity for photos without fencing in the foreground — more glass panels please. Altogether, a very good afternoon out with informative talks from knowledgable keepers. Excellent value for money.

A great zoo right on Sandown’s beautiful seafront. It has an amazing collection of beautiful tigers and big cats but it is a little sad to see them penned in a zoo. That said it was a lovely day out especially liked the lemurs. Good disabled facilities and nice food.

I did like the Isle of wight zoo, but I had broke my leg when I went and I was in a wheel chair. The ground was really uneven and hard for the person pushing me, also it was not very nice for me ether. The ground had stones on it so you could not see the holes which were in the ground. The chair got stuck a couple of times, which scared the life out of me.
The animals also were not very happy and made me sad because I love animals and they should be in there natural habitat. I did like the monkeys because they were showing off a bit when we looked at them. Also the shop was really expensive and could not buy much.

The zoo located in the Granite Fort at Yaverland in Sandown is very unassuming from the beach view. It features a gravel car park with a white washed fort style wall, with the word ZOO hand painted in plain black lettering above the entrance, with a plastic tiger sculpture above this.
Inside the Zoo there’s a very wide selection of generic ‘exotic’ animals, including a large number of big cats and primates. It was the first time I’ve seen a lot of these animals and I value the zoo for providing this experience, but I was left with some nagging doubts as the animals were in, what appeared to temporary, small cages, and were simply pacing back and forth constantly.
I’ll make a return trip to see if they seem any happier, it might just be the way animals are when they’re not in the wild I suppose! Entrance was a little pricey, but it was a decent experience overall.

I’m not normally a fan of zoos — I can’t help but wonder whether the beasties are thinking is there more to life than this? I’ve been to this zoo before (about five years ago) and if I’m frank I didn’t enjoy it, however, having been recently I was pleasantly surprised to see that much more has been made of the animal enclosures. In fact the animals must like it because one of the Spider Monkeys had just had a little baby to the surprise of the keepers!
We went during the Breast Cancer awareness week and the comedy tiger referred to elsewhere was painted an even more comedic pink!
Well worth a visit, but do choose your day carefully. Poor weather is going to mean you get very wet and the animals are going to be tucked up in their little houses as they clearly have more sense than humans!

I love going to the Isle of Wight Zoo and Tiger Sanctuary in Sandown, because there’s so much to see and do there. Firstly the animals there are really adorable, theres lemurs, tigers, lions, etc and when your there its like a massive park where you can wander around to see the different animals. The place is clean and easy directions lead you to different areas of the park. Definitely a great place to visit!

Housed in a pleasantly dilapidated WW2 fort (lots of activity on the island in those years) this does not look prepossessing on the outside. There is also a comedy tiger statue on the top which may put you off. But once inside: ooh baby. The tigers are what you’re here for, and they do not disappoint. They are housed in specially themed enclosures which were being expanded (!) when I was there last October (2007). There is one beautiful white tiger who is missing an eye who is quite breathtaking when he’s pacing about with just a bit of chicken wire to save you. Lions: sleeping, possibly stuffed. (the lion; dangerous in Africa, comatose every bloody where else.) The lemurs and monkeys are also fantastic, and as well as that there are creepy crawlies for a bit of a bonus. It’s not so good on a bad day though, as it’s all outside, (except the spiders) and on a hot day wouldn’t everyone prefer to be on the beach? Anyway, well worth a visit if you’re in the area. And there’s a leopard!
