Does anyone remember Supermarket Sweep from the 90s? That’s exactly what I thought of when I went here. Unfortunately there are no inflatable bonuses, no pick n mix selections, no contestants legging it down the aisle and alas no Dale Winton. Sovereign, or ‘Sovvers’ as we workers in Salford Quays nickname it, was in its heyday in the years before MediaCityUK was built. It would be the destination of choice for freshly made sandwiches and snacks as there was really not much else to choose from apart from the food court in the Lowry Mall. Since Booths has opened and there are a wider selection of lunchtime offerings these days it’s sadly somewhat a shadow of its former self. The range of fillings at the deli counter have been halved from a few years ago, which is strong evidence of a drop in regular custom. The food store itself is still very well stocked, however, but as the other reviews have mentioned, the prices are more expensive than in other supermarkets, so it’s probably more of a last resort destination to grab something rather than where you’d do your big shop. It was the fact that they were classed as closed down on Unilocal that I ventured down here to double check and rectify. It’s certainly quiet in there, but they’re not dead… yet.

Right next to Salford Quays, it is quite good to access this little shop when you are thirsty or you need a little snack. They have good sandwiches, but not the most brilliant ones in the world. I don’t really like it cuz is so empty all the time. I mean this shop is incorporated in a block of flats, so you will expect to be someone in it at any time. People are nice in there, they are happy to help you out with anything. Even of you are obsessed with the price of an item or another. The prices are a bit up for what it offers, but yet again, when you have your lovely Sunday walk on the quays, the last thing you care is probably paying an extra 50p for some biscuits. All in all, it’s not the perfect place go for shopping, but if you fancy some bits and bobs now and then is great. Plus, it is open until late in the night, even in the weekends, which obviously is quite a good thing.

Sovereign Food and Wine is no typical newsagents — there isn’t anything this place doesn’t do! Situated just outside the Lowry Outlet Mall, the shop itself has long opening hours — until late into the night! They sell all the typical food products, including fresh fruit and veg and even has a deli counter which makes fresh, tasty sandwiches at lunchtimes — quite popular by the many office workers in the area, so be warned there is usually quite a queue! One issue I will point out is that this shop is quite overpriced. If you aren’t able to get to another shop, then Sovereign will suffice, but be prepared for a hefty bill! The shop staff are always friendly and pleasant.
