THE best fish’n’chips I have *ever* had. I have been coming here regularly for years, I used to live in Pudsey but even though I now live some 20 miles away, I still come here if I fancy some fish’n’chips. What makes this place is the consistency, the fish and chips are never anything less than 4.5 out of 5, and they are usually 5⁄5. No other place can touch it if you’re after traditional fish and chips.

I used to live in Farsley so I’d often get take away from this place. I don’t tend to eat take away food much but this was always my first choice if take away was an option. This is the first time I’ve actually eaten in and I was really hung-over so was pretty excited about it ! I loved it as soon as I walked in. It was so old skool! Like one of the fish restaurants you would go to when you go to the North Coast really tacky but in a good way because it was exceptionally clean. I liked how tea cups and saucers were at the ready and cheap paper napkins displaying the restaurants logo. We all ordered haddock and chips which came with bread in triangles and set along the side plate as white/brown/white/brown with lashings of cheap margarine(brilliant!) I didn’t opt for the tea which came with the meal I just can’t drink tea when I eat I really don’t understand it. I ordered a glass of red wine and got it in one of those mini bottles which I thought again was brilliant(in a that’s really bad but great lol kinda way) It came out pretty quickly and the staff were definitely on the ball. However I thought they looked pretty miserable to be honest. I was initially a little disappointed because the chips looked really under cooked and they didn’t taste great either but you did get a mountain of them. The fish a little smaller than I’d had here before but it was pretty nice, again, not as good as I’d had before though. Overall really decent chippy but I think I’d stick to the takeaway because its £8 for fish and chips in the restaurant which I thought was a bit pricey for what it was(just a chippy and not in the city centre). Glad I went though

Now I must admit that this was my first visit to a fish and chip restaurant. It was my Mums 84th birthday, and this is where she wanted to go. So along with my 3 sisters we turned up and it was very busy. The restaurant was full and we were told that we would have to wait for the next available table. There was a comfy window seat that my mother was able to sit on until a table became available. I must mention that if you aren’t peckish when you walk throught the door. That will be very quickly remedied by the aroma that wafts over you as soon as you open the front door. After waiting 5 very mouth watering minutes we we shown to out table. First impressions? Very clean, very relaxed atmosphere and the staff were very pleasant indeed. We skipped the soup and went straight for 3x fish and chips and a pensioners portion. We also asked for 3 servings of mushy peas, portion of scraps and 4 cups of tea. There are other meals on offer but I wanted fish & chips and I am sorry to say didn’t even look at the menu. My sense of smell had already chosen what I was to order. Our waiter asked if we would like the tea now or when our meal was served. Which I thought was a nice touch. After about 5 minutes our food and drinks were served. Everything was spot on! Even a 2nd pot of hot water should we require a tea refil. I was surprised at how large the pensioners portion was. There didn’t seem to be much difference at all. The staff left us alone to eat and talk. They were very unobtrusive but never out of reach. Just once did our waiter ask if everything was ok. Which was enough. I was the only one who had a desert and it was ice cream with chocolate sauce. I tasted like it had come straight out of a professional ice cream making machine. It was very nice. After we had all finished eating our waiter was summond and I couldn’t believe that for 4 of us it had only cost £33. What a bargain. Great atmosphere, great food, very good staff and all at a very reasonable price. Well done Wetherby Whaler. I will definitely go again.

I have a great fondness for this place having lived in Pudsey and it being my chippy of choice for Friday night fish and chips treat. I really recommend you try eating in if you haven’t. The staff are so friendly, the portions are huge(but you can order the extra large if you’re appetite is astronomical) and it’s great value too. Another plus point is bottles of tomato ketchup, not a sachet in sight! A downside for one of my dining companions was the lack of pickled onions. Also, the teapots can be a little temperamental so be careful with those. Since leaving Pudsey, I now go here about once every couple months with my Pudsey friends and always look forward to it!

THE Wetherby Whaler has spread, it is no longer confined to Wetherby alone it has spread it wings and laid anchor in Pudsey, Wakefield, and York. As you may anticipate from the name this restaurant is distinctly fishy with haddock, plaice, scampi(my Nanna’s favourite) and prawn a plenty you’d scarcely believe that there’s over fishing in the seas. There’s a vegetarian option/dish of the day and a 3 coursed senior citizens special coming in at £6.65 for 3 whole courses. A traditional chippy with booze available.
