To make up for Wednesday’s disappointment at Tong Palace, we went for the early bird at The Arch on Friday. The food was as good as ever, I had the mussels marinières followed by the two venison and a crème brullee for dessert. My beloved and I disagree over the quantities; he feels they are too small, I feel they are fine. We weren’t offered any bread and the butter was removed when the starters arrived. The mussels were very nice and a good quantity but were served without any bread or a spoon for the sauce. Since other tables were being offered bread, we stopped a waitress and asked for some and asked for the butter back. It does occur to me, that if you don’t know how to serve a dish, maybe you find out before you add it to the menu. The venison was two chops and a sausage, serve with a pile of sliced potatoes, the vegetables with it were a mix of carrots, broccoli and potatoes. The sausage was nice and meaty, the chops lean and tender. The crème brûlée was delicious, larger than such portions often are and the caramel was perfect, not burned.

The more I delve the more I realise Leeds is ace. We all know that but it’s truly a place with so much to offer that even a social butterfly(that makes me sound a lot better than I actually am) like me, is constantly bowled over by new and exciting finds and Pudsey threw up quite a few of them. So move on to the Arch. It boasts an award winning chef so I’m always going to get a tad excited about weighing up their credentials. Maybe it’s because I’m British and we like to knock down those who fly high but I must admit I couldn’t really find any grumbles on this one. The starters are fine dining at its best without being overly pretentious. For the main I had a very nice risotto but you’ve got all the main players such as steak and fish. My only gripe is and this isn’t exclusive to here, why call gravy jus? Come on people don’t complicate the matter, it’s gravy. Right rant over. As for deserts, the cheese board is excellent. You’ll also get some local cheeses on the plate as well as French offerings. Three courses for just under £17 seems a fair price to me as well although you will pay supplements on that for some of the dishes. Good food and a hoorah from me.

Menus that change on a regular basis… that is exactly what I like to hear. The owner is also the chef produces a menu which is very English and very meaty although there are some vegetarian options tome of the phrases used to describe dishes make me cringe a little such as they seem a little too showy and highfalutin but it is a delicious menu in a very modern restaurant. Three courses will set you back £16.95 with two courses costing £14.50 with a two pound supplement on Saturday and because I am feeling pleasant today I am not going to go on a tirade about that. Book in advance for a special occasion.
