Having driven up the very impressive drive that leads up the hill to Hoghton Tower, you can’t help get rather excited about what goodies this monthly farmers market has to offer.
The web site isn’t shy about telling you about this markets credentials ««over 50 stall holders… featured by Radio 4’s Food Programme», going on to list the traders you can expect to meet, and the higgledy piggledy collection of old out buildings adds to the build up. Speaking of build up I better bloody get on and actually talk about the market…
If you’re a regular to the regions farmers markets there are likely to be a fair few traders you recognise, which depending on your view could be a good thing coz you can pick up those ace sausages & that awesome organic rye bread you just luuurrrve… or you could be thinking I could’ve saved myself the petrol?!
There is a great range of stalls providing everything from amazing quality fresh & cured meats, unusual and exciting chutneys & preserves, locally grown veg and the obligatory too good baked goods. The combined & obligatory aroma of sausage butties & coffee follows you as you wander round several barns/​stables which is a nice change to the usual farmers market rain soaked experience.
This is a good contender in the farmers market stakes in an area that is well serviced by said markets, the key feature for me is the location which would entice me to come back but only with a planned trip out for Sunday lunch. I think my first port of call for such fayre would be my local monthly markets in Helmshore/​Ramsbottom.

Hoghton Tower is about 5 miles from Preston. It is the residence of the de Hoghton family.
Regular events can be seen there. Classic Car weekend good to see.
Really exciting is the Motor Bike uphill sprint in April. The sprint is over approx quarter mile in a straight line. Most of the half mile long drive can be seen in one of the picture.
The tower is atop a hill and when originally built would have been a great landmark and relatively easy to defend.

Interesting and fun family day out. Dungeons and castle and tower. Take a picnic, no café.
