Driving along the main road through the village of Trelawnyd(near Prestatyn; North Wales) the large mound at the top of the hill might catch your eye. And so it should. This is Gop Hill, one of the most important Bronze-Age man-made mounds in the UK — and second in size only to Silbury Hill. With 19th century excavation indicating the former presence of a burial chamber, the site is of particular historic significance — more so, when a stroll around its base reveals that it was built, stone upon stone, above a network of caves that reveal habitation dating back to the last ice age(as well as the skeletons of hyenas and wolves). Park in the vilage, and walk up the access road to Gop Hill itself(the route is waymarked, and involves crossing a stile). Once at the top, your efforts will be rewarded by tremendous scenic views for miles around — and a sense of being somewhere very special. Open all year round; ready access and no admission charges.
