This is a tribute/memorial to Lord Baden-Powell who founded the Scouts on Brownsea Island. He sits looking toward the island, an old man in Scout uniform. Unless you know the statue is there, you can walk by without noticing! What a shame. Also, the statue is black and feels like some sort of resin. Since Poole is where it is, one would have thought Purbeck stone was more appropriate, and certainly more noticeable. I happen to know this statue cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. How sad that it is barely noticeable, and has no plaque or epithet. I think it’s ended up being more of an insult than a tribute! The Scouts were started on Brownsea Island in 1908, and a jamboree was held there earlier this year. Scouts came from all over the world. For some reason, Prince William went to another one elsewhere in the Uk — I don’t think Brownsea has a helipad. Very disappointing.
