Lopwell Dam

A very attractive beauty spot to the north of Plymouth near the Maristow estate and not far from Tamerton Foliot, surrounded by pretty countryside. Follow the narrow lane down to the River Tavy, where you will find the Lopwell Dam car park. It’s possible to actually walk across the narrow at the dam at low tide, or even to take a vehicle across, but obviously care has to be taken. On the other side there are paths which lead to Bere Ferres (takes about an hour to walk there). The saltmarshes are an important habitat for many species of birds. We visited just the other day — after a gap of many years — and were delighted to find it as unspoilt as ever.
