Update October 2008: this is under new management. I’ve not visited recently, but reports are that it has declined a bit from my last stay. If that’s true, it is a pity. *********************** This is a nice, traditional pub(formerly a coaching inn) with accommodation and a restaurant, situated in a quiet corner of this small town, a few miles east of Peterborough. The main bar is traditionally furnished and sells a good range of well-kept real ales. There’s also a smaller(and rather noisier) rear bar, frequented by a younger crowd of mostly locals, which can get very busy at week-ends. The restaurant is very popular locally: it offers a traditional English menu(using fresh local ingredients), with a carvery on Sundays, with plenty of vegetarian options. The accommodation has recently been refurbished in a clean, modern style and offers very good value, with single rooms starting at £30 per night B&B, although not all are en-suite(check when booking if this is important to you). Overall, it’s a much nicer option than the rather dull chain hotels in Peterborough. The staff were especially welcoming and very friendly. There’s off-street car parking at the rear, but the most difficult issue is finding the pub in the town’s odd one-way system. It’s worth ringing for directions first time around.
