It is still an excellent place to drink, talk and generally relax. With lots of different beers and several ciders, it’s nice to find a pub where drinking, not eating, is the order of the day! Long may it continue!

If you love real ale, you will love the Palmy Arms. Located in Woodston, it’s handy for drinkers in the south side of town. I have been going here for a few years and they had a refit eralier this year. I thought they would ruin the place, but it has been an improvement. Inside the bar is at the rear, where through a large window, you can see your pint being pulled straight from the cask. Seating can be limited as it’s not a huge pub, and there is smoker’s garden area at the rear. Now the beer, I think it is a Batemans pub, so you always see their ales, but they also carry many other real ales. I think they usually have at least 8 different ones on, so quite a few guest beers to choose from. They also have a varied supply of bottled beers including German ones. A friendly local, you’ll always find another drinker to strike up a chat with.

The Palmerston is a true real ale pub in the purist of senses. The Palmerston has a wonderful selection of real ales, cider, lambics and trappists. There are normally between 8 – 10 real ales behind the bar kept in tip top condition. These normally consist of 3 – 4 Batemans ales and an ever changing selection of guest ales. The ale is served straight from the barrel so no unclean pipes and taps to taint the taste. You can watch your beer being poured with care and attention with the recent addition of a glass partition between cellar and bar. Once again there is a new team behind the bar,(Ian Benton local businessman) realised the unfulfilled potential in the premise after new landlords allowed the pub to slide. Ian is working hard to bring back the community spirit of this local pub with Quiz nights, Ukulele Nights, Philosophy Nights, conker championships and many many more events. The Palmerston has no jukebox, no gambling machines, no gizmos too keep you amused, you have to resort to the old favorite of conversing with your friends and with whomever is sat next too you at the bar, and with the recent introduction of the smoking ban Smirting(smoking and flirting) is freely practiced outside on the terrace. The live Irish music has now gone but in place is a Sunday Pub quiz and the occasional acoustic band on a Sunday afternoon. So for those looking for the warm friendly village pub feel in the city, take a walk up Oundle Road and visit the Palmerston for Real ale and real conversation!
