The food is second to none and the atmosphere is brilliant. The costumed staff are very helpful and friendly and the grounds are stunning. Only disappointed with the stable rooms out in the courtyard as they were extremely cramped, very much like staying in a very small loft conversion.

Wow!!! We stayed at Lumley Castle in December after a works Christmas meal in one of their private dining rooms(seats 18 – 24 very comfortably). Food was pretty good considering it looked as though all the function rooms and bedrooms were fully booked! The bedroom in the old castle was amazing, high ceiling, 4 foot thick walls, a high comfortable bed, well equipped bathroom, all in immaculate order. Wonderful evening, good accommodation, great food. If you can get a good deal then make sure you go — or if you want to impress American visitors! We’ll be back. :-D

Lumley Castle has stood for more than 600 years, giving spectacular views across the River Wear and Durham County Cricket Ground. Lumley Castle is a magnificent monument to a bygone age of chivalry and honour. The Castle has amazing parkland grounds and leads onto the Chester — le-Street golf course which celebrates its centenary this year. You will be overwhelmed by the decadents of the castle from the moment you approach it, standing out from a distance across the local sky line. With 73 rooms of various themes it never fails to astound you when entering the rooms for the first time. The King James is an exclusive suite with a 20ft high four poster Queen Ann bed, also with its own lounge area, Jacuzzi and en-suite. As you would expect they cater for an unforgettable wedding package, with enough rooms for plenty of guests. Also large functions which can be themed in the various banqueting halls with staff all in period costume. With all the above benefits as you would expect it is a little on the expensive side, but worth it for a special treat.

If there was ever a place that lived up to the name ‘No Ordinary Hotel’ it is Lumley Castle. In the past it has played host to kings and princes, now with a unique reputation as a luxury hotel it welcomes guests from across the globe including International Cricket Teams. Lumley Castle takes its name from its creator, Sir Ralph Lumley, a well-known and popular soldier, renowned for his bravery in battles. In 1388 he played a key role in the defence of Berwick-on-Tweed and led the attack at the Battle of Otterburn. At Lumley Castle Hotel every room is different, each filled with historical artefacts and special touches where you may even find a four poster bed or a bathroom hidden behind the door of a wardrobe or a bookcase. Discover the charms of Lumley Castle and you will find that this is where the practical meets the theatrical, where elegance, imagination and comfort will be your bed-fellows. Rumour has it that you may meet a ghost or two but I’ll leave that to you. Dining at Lumley Castle is a feast for all the senses. While your eyes delight in the elegant surroundings of the Black Knight restaurant or the sophisticated style of one of the private dining rooms, your taste buds can savour the glorious flavours of Lumley’s fine food. Total excellence, charming service and relaxation, what more could you ask. I personally give it five stars.

Lumley Castle includes a posh hotel, restaurant and bar, as well as function rooms. I can’t vouch for the hotel or function rooms but the restaurant is very impressive, and in how many bars can you take your drink out into the courtyard of a castle! As must be expected, it’s expensive, but for a special occasion is worth it. For a quirky edge, they run ‘Tudor Banquets’, where parties sit in the great hall, at long tables, hosted by the staff in full costume, telling jokes and plying people with mead. It’s a veryrare experience. I recommend it for large groups of friends who could lose themselves in the bizarreness of the situation and just get it. Because it is, and it’s meant to be, very funny.
