Once upon a time, I was walking down the main street in Penarth, only to spy a small little sign between two shops: Perks. Now, I spent some time trying to decide what this could possibly be. My theories ranged from ornamental street art, to a subtle sign for a sleazy brothel. Finally I took the plunge… … I googled it. ‘A café’, said Google. ‘A café?’ said I. ‘I shall have to go and see!‘ Nervously, I went back to the little sign, a friend in tow(just in case). Perks has no entrance of its own, you have to go through the opticians and up a flight of stairs. And then, wow. A wonderfully hidden space, brightly decorated, with sofas and tables and wi-fi and flowers and posters and food and coffee. It is, indeed, a café. And a lovely one at that. The food is great; sandwiches, salads, cakes and some hot food. And the coffee is even better. There is even a roof garden soaked in sun. The only reason Perks doesn’t get that fifth elusive star, is because more people need to go!

Since the introduction of starbucks this great little café has very much taken a back seat. Serving coffee, tea, hot chocolate and a wide range of cakes as well as light lunches is a great place to spend a quiet afternoon The pricing is very good and the staff are very helpful and polite.

Perks café is situated directly above specsavers on the high street and is a lovely little café since its refit. The décor is comforrtably modern with some squashy leather sofas and plenty of seating available. The menu is for snacks and light lunches and the food is very yummy and nicely presented. The prices are very reasonable and the place is fairly child friendly although there is no lift. You are welcome to leave pushchairs downstairs though. The staff were very efficient the last time I visited and quick to help when my youngest spilt her drink. The coffee is quite good but I did find the tea a little weak on my last visit. Starbucks is fair competition!
