Ever heard of the Maid of Neidpath Castle? As I was walking I came across a keep hidden away from everyday life. The four square tower is build on a hill overlooking the river Tweed and is located 1 mile west of Peebles. Sadly it was closed when I got there and therefore only 4 stars. I have not seen the interior yet, but I am sure it’s quite mystical. The«castle» was build in the 14th century by the Hay family, but a previous castle might have occupied the site since the 12th century build by the Fraser’s. Getting back to the story of the Maid. Her name supposedly was Jean Douglas and she is still haunting this place after all this time. The girl was madly in love with the son of the laird of Tushielaw. He was considered to be below her station, such her father did not give permission. Her lover was sent away(to fight battles) and when he returned she had wasted away, so drastically, that he did not recognize her anymore. This caused her to die of a broken heart! What a romantic story for all the romantics amongst us. Sad ending so, but totally understandable. Love is a powerful emotion. The keep is surrounded by wilderness which makes it such an amazing sight. Will go there again very soon.
