During a recent work rip to Oxford, one of my co-workers enthusiastically recommended Yeti for a dinner outing. I’d never tried Nepalese food, but I’m always up for new things so we got in a cab and headed right over. When we walked in the door around 6:30pm, we were surprised to find it totally and completely empty. Now, an empty restaurant doesn’t usually inspire confidence, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. I’m so glad we did. The first thing we noticed: the menu is HUGE and full of things that all sound delicious and amazing. There’s quite a lot of Indian cuisine on the menu, so we narrowed it down by trying to stick to as many Nepalese dishes as possible(the menu was quite helpful in pointing these dishes out to us). Things we tried: Chilli paneer — fantastic and SOOOOO spicy. Chicken momo — good. Not my favorite dish of the evening, but still solid. Khasi Jhol — I love lamb and cumin. This was terrific. I could eat this every day. *I can’t for the life of me remember what the last dish was called, but it was two extremely large meatballs. It was good, but not as good as the lamb.) We also had a decent bottle of Indian Sauvignon Blanc. By the time we left, the restaurant was hopping, with every table full and a party of four waiting by the front door — completely negating our initial empty-restaurant concerns. Apparently this is more of a late-night dining spot. The food and the ambiance at Yeti were both terrific. Now that I know I like Nepalese food, I’ll definitely seek it out again!

Our experience at the Yeti restaurant was outstanding! The restaurant is small with a pretty nondescript presence just a little bit out of town. Once we stepped in the door, however, our experience changed dramatically. The places is cozy, and it was buzzing that night. Most tables were full, although we were able to get in by making a reservation only a few hours in advance. The clientele was mixed, with some tables made up entirely of Oxford students, some older couples(such as ourselves), and some tables with a mixture of Oxford students and(presumably) their parents. The service was prompt and friendly, and the meal was outstanding! Nepalese cuisine is similar to the cuisine of northern India, but with just enough of a difference to make the dining experience unique. The dishes we had were very flavorful without being too spicy(so many ethnic restaurants add flavor simply by adding heat). My wife is gluten intolerant, and there were ample dishes for which she could choose. We would go there again in a heartbeat!

Newly opened on the Cowley Rd and tried the lunch there. It was a very decent meal if a little quiet. Excellent chicken curry and different from the normal Cowley road fare. They say they’re Nepali and there are a few leanings that way. Started with steamed momos which were made in-house and not the best I’ve eaten in the UK. The spicy Nepali saag was absolutely brilliant and they said they grow it themselves.
