Great pub near to Lydford Gorge which is a lovely walk, made even better by the location of The Castle. Have eaten there a few times always choosing the steak, ale and Devon blue cheese pie which is wonderful.

Many years ago, after a walk around Lydford Gorge, I popped into this pub for a welcoming pint. We needed a overnight stop-over on our way to Cornwall and I remembered this quaint hostelry and booked in. I am so glad I remembered this pub. We arrived early, giving us time for a few drinks in their wonderful garden. A great selection of shrubs around the adequately spaced tables. Oh yeh, and a great selection of real ales LOL. After a short while we were shown to our room. Lovely room, with all the amentities needed. Comfy, clean bed. In fact the whole room was spotless. After a short nap we went down to dinner, the table had been reserved earlier which was a nice touch making us feel ‘special’. Good menu with a choice that would cover every taste. Wines not overpriced as some pubs seem to do. Lovely meal with really good friendly, yet professional, service. A few drinks and we were ready for that comfortable bed. Although the room overlooked the road, it is a very quiet area and I don’t think a car passed after 11.00 pm. The breakfast was filling and extremely wholesome. Didn’t need a lunch after that ‘gut buster’. Thanks everyone for a very pleasant overnight stay, we will be back.

Really liked this pub. It lived up to its description of having character. Great menu options. Lots of different specials available as well including starters and mains. Ordered the burger upon the recommendation of the bar tender and I’m glad I took their advice because it was really nice. It came with salad and chips and I found the chips quit flavourless but I’m not a big chip fan so maybe I’m just hard to please. I loved that there was seating available outside with views of the castle(though it’s not typically what I expect a castle to look like). The inside of the pub was fabulous, lots of character and clean. I would definitely go back here if I was in the area. Main negative would be lack of signage of where to pack. There was space at the back of the pub to park but I didn’t see any signs to indicate that.

The food is 3 stars but the setting is 5 stars, so 4 stars. After visiting the nearby Lydford Gorge and Waterfall, we were hungry and happened upon this cute-looking pub, and I think we made a good decision despite knowing nothing about it. It’s hard to know if you can believe a sign that insists it is a «Character Pub», but this one does have legit character. It is clearly old and the décor doesn’t seem to have changed in 30+ years, but it’s really cute and English and I loved it. We sat in the beautiful back garden area for dinner, then moved inside for dessert when it started getting chilly, and we liked both spots. We were eating at a really weird time in the middle of the afternoon, so we practically had the whole place to ourselves, but we could tell it was going to get busy soon as several tables were reserved. I had a broccoli and cauliflower bake, which came with veggies(over-steamed with absolutely no flavour added whatsoever) and potatoes(I got the new potatoes, and had to ask for butter — they came with absolutely no flavouring). The cheese bake itself was also pretty bland, but not terrible. I liked the cheesy garlic bread and chips my friend ordered better than my own meal. She also got a burger that she really enjoyed. For dessert, the bread and butter pudding and sticky toffee pudding were good, and super filling, but nothing super exciting. I just loved the ambiance of this place so much that I didn’t much care.

A late afternoon visit in late August. As other review says it all I can confirm that the place is a true local pub that exudes charm. This is the sort of pub that would make you want to live in a village. The beer is kept really well. It is like walking into history but totally functional.
