I suppose some cultural differences are to be expected when travelling across the Atlantic but when I hear the term Surf and Turf I am envisioning a large Steak and Lobster. What I got was a teenie tiny steak and 1 shrimp or Prawn as they call them here — yes 1 shrimp not a half dozen or even a pair but just one lousy shrimp — and that’s apparently how 1559 defines Surf and Turf. The steak was also small, if I had to guess I would say that it was maybe 4 oz. Now while we Texans eat larger cuts of meat 4 oz is small by anybody’s standard. While the steak was good, it wasn’t exceptional and at £24.50 it was very expensive. The fries while cooked 3 times were OK but my first one was under cooked in the middle. For dessert I had the Panna Cotta which was the best part of the meal. The service was very good and that’s why I gave it 3 stars.

1559 is the restaurant in Sprowston Manor, the Marriott property just north of Norwich. I found it to be quite fancy and perhaps a bit expensive. Breakfast is the usual American-style«full English» buffet with fried eggs, sausages, bacon, fried mushrooms and tomatoes plus baked beans, fried bread and hash brown potatoes. They also have a good selection of cereals and fruits for your yogurt. Continental breakfast options include fresh breads, sliced meats, smoked salmon and cheeses and a pile of pastries and juices. An ala carte menu is available, but the prices work out about the same. Dinner choices seem to vary based on what’s available. It was good, but expensive. Dinner for two with drinks and an appetizer topped £65. Note that breakfast is free for Marriott Platinum elite, even if you’re on a «room only» rate.
