A large, multi-layer Spoons in the heart of Norwich. They have roundabout 10 casks on offer, including a few scoops for me. Friendly enough bar folk, typically bargain pricing. Worth a quick visit if you are spending some time in town.

Very good for beer! This is a nicer looking Spoons, this appearance enforced by the older building they find themselves in(EST1485!). It was cooler downstairs and the external area out by the road is quite nice. There were quite a few ales to choose from. I chose Cairngorm pollination(tasty).

A standard Wetherspoons-affiliated pub, right down to the glossy table menus and the beer prices. The chicken caesar salad was good with a reasonable but not excessive amount of dressing and parmesan cheese. I saw lots of very inexpensive food choices — the usual egg and chips or ham egg chips platters. Excellent location, on the hill next to the Norwich Castle and across the street from the Castle Mall.

Everything about this place is poor. Its location, especially in the ‘beer garden’ is next to some traffic lights, so you get fumes and noise in the mix! The benches were dirty and poorly laid out and at night the lighting is rather too dark. The inside of the pub was dirty too, with scratched tables, stained floor and a general feel of stickiness. Too many stairs and hidy holes that made a vulnerable feeling for the customer as everyone seemed to be watching everyone else. Ordered a soft drink which was from the hose. It was weak and tasteless. Burger I bought was tough and luke warm Poor service to be honest, could easily be improved, but lacks and atmosphere and a sense of security. Some doormen on the doors would probably help.

The fact that a few years ago, on New Years Eve, this place called last orders at 11pm, ought to alert you immediately to some fairly serious problems. Don’t ask me what I was doing in a Weatherspoons on NYE. It’s not a fun story, and any marginal traces of fun that may have been involved soon evaporated when I and my companions found ourselves thrust out onto the street – with all the other bars either full, or charging extortionate admission – in the dying minutes of a shitty year. So I hold a grudge. Other than that… eh, it’s a Weatherspoons. Cheap beer, cheap(kind almost edible) food, and utterly without soul.

A bizarre mix of ‘old mans pub’ and city centre bar, The Bell appeals to all ages. The menu for food is vast, as you would expect from this chain, and the atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed. Make this the start of a night out for cheap drinks, vital in these days of credit crunch, and return the next morning for a cure-all cooked breakfast !!
