As boaters we visit many pubs for food and a drink. This place & it’s owner will never be forgotten by us. I have never been treated so badly by anyone before and we are still angry months later. Initially i had to ask for some ice as the chair i sat on reflected the heat from the fire & has scared my arm. The main meal I ordered was called a type of vegetable bake. It was mostly mashed potato layered over a milky sauce & I really could not find more than about 3 pieces of an orange vegetable. The accompanying ‘new’ potatoes were earthy. Once I managed to get seen to I sent the food back and heard the manager say ‘what’s wrong with it?’ Very angrily to the waitress. The glass of wine that came with the meals was very vinegary– need I say more. The owner made a rude comment about us that was heard by all and was embarrassing. I do not expect to be treated badly or have rude comments made as a way of revenge for my having the courage to send back a meal that is totally unacceptable! When I went up to pay for one of the two meals I had to have an argument with the owner in front of all other visitors as he said that no one else was complaining and insisted I pay for both meals. I refused, payed for one & consequently had my debit card thrown back at me. Awful man. I wish I’d refused to pay at all seeing as my partner had to eat alone & be ensulted & embarrassed by this large, sweaty, angry man. I highly recommend The Black Horse in Foxton as mentioned by another reviewer. Their food & service is top class & they will do all they can to make your meal how you want it.

After a day working the canal we found ourselves at Crick beyond the top of Watford locks. The nearest pub of good repute is the Red Lion which turned out to be so busy on this Friday evening that we were doubtful that we’d find a table. Despite the busy bar area, we were spotted and served immediately from the good selection of cask ales. We both went for a pint of Deuchars bitter. The menu, surprisingly, didn’t feature any starters so we went straight for fillet steak with a side salad and chips and a bottle of Shiraz. The gaffer didn’t want names or credit cards(«I can remember people’s faces») and a plate of garlic bread that we chose to substitute for a starter arrived almost immediately. The steak was excellent — good flavour and tender — and the salad was fresh. Cheese and ice cream followed and we left £65 for two including the tip. Good friendly service — the Red Lion is highly recommended.

we have been staying at a nearby hotel on business so us four men gave the red lion a try. 2 of the party are really fussy about their food and complain regularly wherever we go as a group. the red lion, an old coaching inn, looks the part both inside and out and was very busy with people eating[usually a good sign]. we were made very welcome and the service was excellent. the food was a reasonable price and i can vouch for the somerset chicken. the helpings were generous and the 2 fussy eaters… no complaints whatsoever, the first time they haven’t moaned about food for many years. we shall be in crick on a regular basis and intend to use this pub all the time. highly recommended

Visited on 9th Sept 2009 and was disappointed by the lack of customer service from the whole staff. I fancied the Lamb Cutlets(which come with Chips and Salad [or choice of potatoes or rice]), my friend had the Steak Pie which came with chips and vegetables. When I asked if I could have vegetables instead of salad I was told No! by both the waiter AND the manager. When asked why, we were told that the Lamb Cutlets had NEVER been served with vegetables and they WOULDNOT serve them for me! I WILLNEVEREATINTHISPUBAGAIN with the current attitude shown by the management and chef! Compare and Contrast; the previous evening we had been at the Black Horse in Foxton and when I asked if I could have Baked Beans with my Gammon Steak, they said that they’d see what they could do. Ten minutes later my plate arrived WITHBAKEDBEANS on. Now that’s what I call service!
