Romas is a family-owned bar and is one of Newtownards’ most popular spots. During the week there are a number of evening events, including karaōke on Wednesday and a pub quiz on Sunday, as well as chart music on Friday nights. I recently visited for lunch and was blown away by the choice that was available– as everything from chilli to pheasant was on the menu. The bar itself is decorated in quite a Medieval style, with stained glass windows, pew-like seating and tapestries adorning the walls. There are also several exposed walls of Scrabo stone(a locally quarried rock from which the famous Scrabo Tower is built) and this really adds to the traditional atmosphere. In contrast, the upstairs restaurant area is much more modern in terms of its décor– with soft furnishings and colours. On this occasion I chose to order chilli con carne, which was extremely well-priced at £7.95. The portions were very generous and the chilli sauce had just the right amount of spice. With an array of desserts(priced at around £3.95 each) Romas’ hot chocolate fudge cake and banoffee pie are real treats. A wide selection of coffee is also on the menu, ranging from the standard Irish Coffee to Calypso Coffee(made from rum). The staff are also very friendly and enthusiastic about ensuring that you have the best dining experience possible. Definitely a place to check out!

Romas is a decent bar with a good atmosphere on the weekends and the karaōke is good craic. The service is good and friendly. I’m a long term customer in romas and it’s my number 1 for choice of pubs I’m the Ards area. The only problem is that it can be over crowded at times and can take a while to get a drink.
