Never had anything but a GREAT meal in this Restaurant! One night myself and 6 other Dad’s we’re out in town and the city centre restaurant we were going to decided to close early(10:15pm on a Thursday night.) and wouldn’t accomodate us. We are all 40 somethings and not unruly! We phoned the owner(Mr Ali) and by the time we’d arrived in our taxis he was standing outside to greet us with two other staff! They served us a lovely meal and a couple of beers. He even gave us a present(a calendar, in October!!!) never mind!!! I’ve been back a number of times and he has a FREE loyalty card which gives special offers!

I’ve been eating at, or taking away from, the New Bengal for around ten years. I’m somebody who really appreciates his food and that’s why I repeatedly return to this restaurant. The food is far superior to any other Indian restaurant I’ve tried in Newcastle(with the exception of Sachins) and the service is always friendly and excellent. I’ll give you an example which rather contradicts the reviews above which I believe are specifically designed to detract people from going to The New Bengal in favour of competitors. That’s one of the problems with review sites, too many reviews are written by competitors. A few months ago I rang the New Bengal to order my favourite dish and a speciality of theirs, Gorkha Kana. Recognising my voice, the Manager, who had answered the phone, called me by my name and apologised that he didn’t have any Gorkha Kana that night. Instead, he asked me to come down to the restaurant in 30 minutes by which time he would have cooked something typically Bangladeshi himself. He was true to his word, the meal was delicious(as it always is at the New Bengal), so much so that I rang him back to thanks him. This typifies the New Bengal not the utter nonsense written in other reviews elsewhere on this site. My advice is to try the restaurant yourself and experience the warm welcome, the great food and the total lack of cockroaches first hand. You’ll very likely see me there doing the same thing.

I am not surprised at Freshblondie’s story about her friends’ ordeal. The management and staff have an absoultely terrible reputation for the appalling way they treat their customers, whom they frankly seem to detest. My wife and I have dined there about ten times in recent years but decided to stop going there last month. We’ll never go back. The attitude of the manager and staff beggars belief. A friend of mine recently told me a disturbing but funny story about a visit to this restaurant by a Gosforth-based legal consultant whom he knows quite well. The legal specialist is a former university lecturer and he may have actually worked as a barrister at one time. Three or four years ago the legal eagle and his friends went to the New Bengal late one evening and were shocked to find a cockroach crawling on the menu at their table. They complained to a waiter who immediately killed the cockroach by banging his hand on it. He removed the crushed insect without explanation or apology. They were very hungry and it was late, so they couldn’t leave to eat elsewhere. They ordered several courses and devoured the lot, along with a few beers too. When the bill arrived they refused to pay any of it, explaining they would not pay for food in a restaurant that had a cockroach infestation. They told the manager that his restaurant ought to be condemned and closed down by the city council. The barrister seemed to know what he was doing and he invited the manager to take them to court. The manager declined but his facial expression was one of sheer hatred and malice. Needless to say they will not be returning to this restaurant, nor would they be welcome! I’ve tried all of the Indian restaurants in the Gosforth area, including the Shahe at Fawdon. The Ahad(near the County Hotel) is easily the best Indian restaurant in that area, although there are Indians in town that I much prefer.

This indian restaurant is located at one end of Gosforth High Street, at the end furthest away from town. Although it is within walking distance of the centre of Gosforth, there is limited local parking — although there is a small car park over the road, which would probably have spaces in the evening. The restaurant itself does do takeaways, and I would class the food for both eat in and take out as some of the best Indian cuisine in the area. Serving standard Indian fare, but all served and presented beautifully and tasting absolutely delicious — I particularly recommend the chicken tikka. Service is very good and the restaurant itself is very attractive inside, although it doesn’t look particularly special from the outside. Recommended for a nice adult evening out.
