I’m not sure that this is the same place we tried on Saturday night, that one was not in The Gate, it was just off the main shopping Street and it was terrible. The service was horrible, I am guessing it might have been because we rocked up at 10.30 and they close at 11. I DID ask if was too late, the miserable excuse for a waiter should have just said«yes» and saved us all a bother. Food was OK, but the long long long long long wait for our waterey cocktails and attitude of the waiter spoilt our time there. Will stick to the one at Teesside, which has always been canny

I have been here a few times for meals at various times of the day and have always received fantastic service. I visited recently with my husband and young baby and again found the service to be exceptional. we were greeted quickly at the door and given a table where we could fit the buggy in next to us, our waiter immediately offered to get us a highchair for the baby before taking our drinks order. On seeing us prepare the baby’s dinner he came straight over and offered to heat the food for us although I did find it quite funny when he returned the plastic pot on a tray. Our starters were brought quickly although we had enough time to feed the baby most of his dinner while our main courses were brought after we had finished with the baby and could both eat together. Obviously this would depend on how good your baby is at sitting while you eat! although I have always found the service to be punctual and friendly. Frankie and Benny’s is set up like an old American diner, with a selection of booth style and normal tables and chairs. The menu follows the same American them with a wide range of options for those wanting a quick bite to eat to a full 3 course meal. With a range of starters including the usual potato skins, soup, onion rings, garlic bread. Followed by a wide range of pizzas, pastas, burgers, grill options and salads. We opted for the Christmas Special menu which was a traditional Christmas dinner with a twist as the turkly was more turkey steaks rather than slices of meat and the roast potatos were just delicious! I would recommend the restaurant to people of all ages as whilst we were there there were also groups of school children, couples and families also including us with a 6 month old baby.

I was in Newcastle on Saturday wanting some lunch and decided on Frankie and Bennys in the gate. I chose this as it looked busy and when I walked in the atmosphere felt good. We were quickly seated and our drink order was taken promptly. There was plenty to choose from on the menu which included pasta, pizza, salads, bugers/sandwichs, grilled meat and favourites(these being your scampi and fish and chips etc.) Main meals ranged from about £7 for burger and chips to about £15 for steak. Not the cheapest but if you go on their website you can print off a voucher for £5 off your bill, so I dont think this place is a bad option for lunch. I did notice though that if you go for lunch Monday to Friday you can get a special deal I think it was £5.95 for 2 courses– again not bad. As for drinks it was £2.95 for a pint of Boddingtons and £1.60 for a half pint of carling. I would not have a problem going to this restaurant chain again and probably will soon armed with my £5 voucher!

This Frankie and Benny’s is located on the first floor of the gate complex. The Gate is a relatively new and modern shopping centre a few minutes walk from Monument and Haymarket Metro station. If you have eaten at Frankie and Benny’s before you will know the general atmosphere, it serves great food but can be quite expensive. The staff are always friendly and helpful and don’t mind changing any of the dishes to suit your dietary needs. The restaurant is large and never gets too busy even at peak times, perfect for large parties or families.

The Newcastle one is upstairs in the ultra-modern Gate that contains a selection of eateries, casinos and a multiplex cinema. There is something for everyone like all Frankie and Benny’s the menu(both food and drink is the same) but the service is excellent, they’ll do anything for you and they’re never in a hurry. Everything is good about it, the atmosphere, the staff, the music and the menu selection. Food has always been good quality and service pleasant. It’s open late and they never hurry you out, the place will stay open until the last person leaves!
