A local success story, The Famous Bankrupt Shop was started in the late nineties with £50 worth of stock and has grown into a profitable regional business with branches scattered all across the North West. Aside from offering high quality fabric for rock-​bottom prices, I think the secret of their success is they offer ready made homeware too. Can’t face the prospect of making your own cushions, quilts, throws and curtains? You can buy them instore in a variety of different colours, textures and materials.
In recent years, TFBS has even branched into furniture and lighting with the shop selling a decent selection of leather and fabric sofas, arm chairs, dining tables, lampshades, chandeliers and mirrors. Admittedly, most of it is a bit too chintzy for my taste but the cheap price point means there’s never a shortage of customers.
