The Wetherspoons chain in Neath, south wales is called the David Protheroe and was a former police station and is a quite well known pub in Neath. It does not have the best of reputations as a pub and is really dissapointing the first time I went there as im not from that area and expected it to be quite plesant meal out after an afternoon shopping in a lovely small town, and I was wrong. The food is not of wetherspoons standard and i was really disappointed, also as everyone else has reviewed it is strangely really noisy and it gets on your nerves. Will not go there again and would rather a bag of chips from the the chipshop opposite argos.

Poor quality food, small dishes, very stingy on their chips. Chicken is never cooked properly. Cheap drinks, but is it in every Wetherspoons?

This is the only Wetherspoons in Neath — David Protheroe — in a building that used to be the main police station. It’s quite a large pub, with plenty of seats. The food and drink are relatively cheap, with lots of choice on the menu. I’ve eaten here a few times. I would highly recommend their breakfasts — they are excellent value, with lots of food on your plate. Whenever I’ve been there in the morning, there’s a real mix of people — from middle aged men having their first(of many) pints of the day, to older ladies with blue or purple rinses meeting for a coffee and a chat. I’ve also had Sunday lunch there, which was a bit of a disappointment. The pub was really busy and they’d run out of many of the items on the menu. Roast beef without a yorkshire pudding??? Finally, the toilets are upstairs, something to bear in mind if your legs can’t manage the stairs.

If you want an exceptionally cheap night out with friends, and don’t mind being surrounded by ‘chavs’(for want of a better word), then this place is actually not too bad. We often start off here for cheap drinks before going on elsewhere. It is, after all, a Wetherspoons pub, so one shouldn’t have expectations of grandeur. It’s cheap, cheerful, a bit tacky but still quite fun if you’re with friends.

I’m rewriting my review of this place because it has improved so much over the past few years. I don’t think you could find a better-value place anywhere in the area for good quality meals. Not only is the menu extremely varied(with several imaginative choices for vegetarians and vegans) but excellent value too. For example, a burger and salad in a large roll with chips and a pint of beer for under £5 — or how about two delicious curries with poppadoms and nan breads with a glass of wine and a pint of Guinness, all for under £10! There are many carpeted areas with dining tables and comfortable chairs and everything is clean and well looked after. Service has been fast each time we’ve been there — three times in the last month(I doubt it will be long before we go there again either!) The bar staff are friendly and pleasant, especially Lloyd who is great(he was very helpful when we lost our keys recently)! There is also a disabled toilet at ground level for anyone who can’t manage the stairs; useful for mums with young children too.
