Great music, dimmed lighting and freshly prepped and exquisite food! This was our first time at Wood, after sauntering past many a time and saying the age old«maybe next time» and finding a more commercialised restaurant. I found the place itself, cosy, quaint and very«wooden». It was simply decorated and I enjoyed the fact that there was only a select amount of tables, so the chefs and waitresses could give there full attention and expertise. We started with two small dishes, potato bravas(standard) and the seared beef which was divine. Then to follow, we devoured the meat and cheese board. Crumbly caved grown cheese, blue Brie, Stilton with mango and the cheddar, alongside chorizo, ham, brasola and Serrano. This was accompanied with a selection of breads, crackers, sauces and apple. We had fun creating concoctions of cheese, meats and sauces! All in all, 4 stars for the great service, food and also the awesome selection of music!

This was one of the first places we visited in Manchester as it was close to where we were staying. The place is decorated with lots of wood(there’s a surprise) and seems to specialise in wine, cheese and meat. We were nearly the only people here and I’m not sure if visiting in the afternoon was inconvenient — it seemed like it was. We grabbed a seat and looked over the menu. First thing I noticed was that the table was super sticky. We ordered a charcuterie platter with three meats for £10 — the waitress said that wasn’t a sharing dish and was meant for one person. Her delivery came across as pretty rude although I’m not sure she meant to be. We stuck with our order and a couple of glasses of wine. The platter was measly. Mostly bread — one of the meats had only two slices and they weren’t very exciting. No way was the platter worth £10 and I was pretty miffed. As we were leaving the waitress was a bit more friendly but for a £22 bill, I really expected a bit more than we got. I’m being kind and rounding up to 3 stars, it’s really more like 2.5 for me.

A lovely, cosy deli perfect for catch ups with friends over wine, cheese boards, meat boards and maybe a little more wine. We spent hours in here! It has such a relaxed atmosphere and they have a great deal on(I can’t remember what day it is) where you can get free wine with certain plates. It’s well worth a visit, very different to the usual eatery in Northern Quarter.

Wood Wine Deli is a bit of sophistication in the middle of the Northern Quarter. The wine bar has a real grown up feel about it and is a nice quiet place to hang out after a busy day at work. We ordered a bottle of syrah rose which was a good quality wine and went down all too easily. The choice of wine is excellent. There is also a small food menu made up of tapas options and platters if you fancy something to accompany your evening tipple. We ordered the cheese platter which was very tasty. There were 4 cheeses in total a Blacksticks Lancashire, Shropshire blue, goats cheese and brie which were accompanied by celery, bread and crackers. Although the platter was nice we felt that at £15 it wasn’t great value for money as there was barely enough for 2 people and we ended up having to order more food so we didn’t go home hungry. I’d go back for drinks but definitely not for food.

Great place and food, love the style of the bar, the platter has loads on it. Service was friendly but a little sloppy and could have easily have sold us more wine had had they been more attentive. Would definitely go back though.

The first thing you notice on entering this downplayed addition to(I’ve always thought) a slightly odd little corner of the NQ is the aroma. It does actually smell of wood and wine. This is a good thing. WWD is a really simple little place that has taken over the end of the Tib street few where Fyg used to be. It’s pretty simple, but really homely and intimate and has a great menu of charcuterie and the like. Wine selection is excellent too. Very relaxed staff provide a decent drinking and dining experience. There’s even a basket of corks if you don’t finish your wine. As if. Do try it.

Eh. What a fairly disappointing first experience. Heading into the NQ with a few colleagues for a glass of wine or two, I took them along to Wood in the hopes of both good wine and exploring the replacement for Fyg(which I adored — best hummus in town!) The interior is fairly similar to Fyg; we’re talking lots of wood, cheese and meat counter, dim lighting. Also a hell of a lot of rope on the ceiling. We were seated with the wine and platter list, ordered our wine, then jumped up to get the main menu. Only then we were told they don’t serve food over 5pm, instead only doing the platters. I would say that I understand the concept, but at the same time we were all so excited and it doesn’t say anywhere that you can only get platters beyond a certain time… We ended up going to Home Sweet Home for dinner but did have some bread and oils — I think they were thyme, olive oil with balsamic, and a raspberry vinaigrette, which was my favourite. I’m not writing it off but it was a shaky first experience!

It’s a tricky one. I’m a big wino and I have high standards and expectations when it comes to wine bars. Wood is the reborn Fyg Delicatessen. Redecorated(beware your knees on that bar) and dited with a new on and off licence. Still in the process of finding its feet. However, having spoken to the manager, I think they’re on the right track. They’re taking it nice and slow instead of generating an uncontrollable hype only for the concept to die off next year. The staff are all keen and interested in wine and food as opposed to be pure service industry experienced and for me that can only go in the right direction. Motivation is key to good service, but hood service is not that difficult to learn(IMO). So they start with an interesting range of wines, some pretty good, some less so. They are keen on getting customer feedback and have the flexibility with their suppliers to adapt so this is only going to get better. They still have the Deli section from Fyg which everyone loved and they can combine that onto a platter for you. £15 gives you plenty to share. It’s only the beginning but I think this has the potential to be THE wine bar of the NQ… if they play their cards right.
