After going on a wander I found myself inside Wing Yip Chinese supermarket. It is full of all sorts and wonderful things which I had know idea what to do with but it was still an experience! They sell a lot of wholesale goods to restaurants as well as having a great selection of things for the public. I got loads of great veg as well as some new beers I had never tried. If you happen to be in the area I would definitely recommend checking it out!

Well if you are fanatic about Chinese cooking this is the place to come! Stumbled upon this place whilst on the way back from walking dogs at Manchester dogs home. We saw the massive pagoda that is outside and became curious as to what it was. This supermarket is absolutely massive and has a huge car park and restaurant above it named ‘Glamorous’, which is advertised with the HUGE pagoda with WINGYIP written on it. It seems to be only a secret outside of the Chinese community as when we got in it was pretty heaving, and this was on a Sunday at about 4pm. There are a massive variety of sauces, noodles, crisps, fruit and veg, fish, meat and pretty much everything else! All in exciting foreign packaging which we both had no idea what most stuff was, which kind of added to the experience. There is a huge range of pre-prepared Chinese foods frozen and fresh, like pork rolls, dumping and huge bags of frozen fish. There is a massive warehouse at the back for wholesale and buying in bulk which we didn’t go into, but looked like a Chinese foods version of the Ikea warehouse. The thing which knocked a star off for me, was that there was a minimum spend of £10 on card which wasn’t advertised anywhere apart from on the till in miniature writing which was slightly irritating. Its also not especially cheap which we expected, having gone to another similar Chinese supermarket on upper brooks street.

An absolutely massive Chinese supermarket with nearly everything you could want, but at the same time surprisingly limited in some of their variety. If you’re mainly looking for dry goods, or shelf stable stuff(think: sauces, noodles, crisps, etc.) they’ve got aisles and aisles of the stuff. You can spend an hour trying to figure out which new Asian snack you want to try, and still be second-guessing yourself as you leave. Their refrigerated and frozen sections are similar with tons of goodies that can be stored long-term for when the craving to reheat and eat hits you. I was disappointed with their fish and produce sections, though. I’ve been here several times and not once have I even been tempted into considering buying the fish. It smells strongly of dead fish — «hey, wait a second,» you say in this conversation I’m making up in my head, «it’s fish, of course it’s going to smell like fish!» Yes, I agree with you, but having been to my fair share of fish markets I’d like to think I can tell when it’s a good or bad smell. This area of the market is the bad wouldn’t-eat-that-if-you-gave-it-away smell. For the size of the market their produce is surprisingly limited. They have a decent selection, but you won’t be able to pick up your weekly fruit and veg from here alone. The store is kept nicely lit and clean, which is always a plus, and though I’ve only had limited interaction with staff they always seem friendly enough. If you come on the weekends, they sometimes do free samples so you can try some of the goodies you’d never think of purchasing… this is dangerous though, as it led me to buying 6 bags of Taiwanese crisps I never would have considered getting before! For those wanting to drive, they have a large parking lot and a generous amount of time you can park while you shop(if I remember correctly it’s over an hour, possibly 2).

Preparing for job interviews is not fun, which is why I am taking a break, since I have been slacking on my reviews! I have been looking for an Asian food store for awhile and bookmarked a couple that I saw here on Unilocal.I forgot about them until I ran across my recipe for Jiaozi(dumplings/potstickers) and decided it was time to make them again. I suggested that we go to the Asian food store first as I usually find that I can find other ingredients that I would normally get at a regular store… and sometimes a bit cheaper! It isn’t difficult to find… huge pagoda out front! There is free parking for customers, but I have a feeling when the place is very busy, it might be difficult to find parking. There is also a restaurant on site, which we will have to come back and try another time. Mr. Snarky grabbed a shopping cart and mentioned how it was more like a shopping cart in the U.S. I assume that meant fixed back wheel

Wing Yip is an Oriental wonderland! It’s catered to the public, Chinese residents, and Chinese restaurants and shops for over 40 years and continues to be incredibly popular. You can get anything you could imagine here in regards to Oriental cuisine, from sauces and dumplings to Chinese, Korean and Japanese sweets and treats, and from live lobster and crab to cooking implements from both home level to industrial level. This time round as well as buying some old favourites and new sauces to try, we got some Korean biscuit snacks, Japanese Crisps, and Chinese milk candy, as well as some small ceramic bowls to replace our ugly plastic versions of the same thing, and even a cooler bag to finish off with. Service is friendly and efficient, and they pack your bags for you and even wrapped up the bowls in newspaper first. The venue is easy to find due to its distinct exterior, and is easily accessible. It also has a free multi-story car park, an on-site restaurant, and a fresh bakery within the store. DEFINITELY one to visit if you’ve never been before. Even if you’re not into Asian food, it’s worth a look for all the other things you can buy, such as fresh horseradish and durian fruit in the fresh fruit and veg area, and the English food offerings too.

Wing Yip is a fantastic Chinese super market up on the Oldham Road — it may seem quite a far way to go but is only 5 – 10 mins walk from the Northern Quarter and there’s also a large car park at the back if you choose to drive. The aisles are filled to the brim with quality sauces, pastes, spices, herbs and general ingredients that will make a tasty feed in all Asian cookery. They have loads of hot sauces(something that my wife can’t get enough of) and are always a good place to go if you’re after something that little bit more exotic. There’s live fresh fish, loads of frozen cabinets selling seafood and meats and you can buy crockery and implements for making great Asian food at home. Just watch what time you go — it was rammed on the Fri afternoon I went and even with all the checkouts staffed I prob had to wait 15 mins to pay!
