I’ve started running due to myself and my partner entering into the Manchester BUPA10k Run(2011). I decided to venture to the so called Specialists. I had a chat with one of the sales team and told him exactly what i was doing. The sales person went straight into back and out came him &4+ trainers to try on. Before all this i should mention they put me on a Treadmill to discover my «gait»(the way i run). This then produced what type of trainer i would need. I tried all 4 of the trainers but did not like 3 of them«cosmetically». The pair i did like well i enquired about the price … £72. well i know real running trainers can be expensive but that was not the price that i wanted to pay. So i told the sale person that i would have to think about it. Then came over another sales person(think it was store manager) who asked me whats the problem. I told him the price was a little out of my budget & he decided to go off on one saying : — «we can’t compete with JJB& others as we are a specialist. If your going to use the treadmill just to find your gait & then go off and find the trainer cheaper online or in another shop then i might as well phone head office and tell them we have to start charging for „gait“ analysis. The price you see is a good price for a specialist trainer.» I felt that the way he spoke to me was not fair. I told him : — «but i as a consumer i have to look at my interests which was the best price available.» In the end he offered 10% discount. Which brought the trainer into my budget. My experience was if you ARE going to buy from them then they will help you & give you as much advise as possible BUT show any signs of just looking or or getting free advise then they mights as well march you out of the shop and ban you from ever entering again.

This is the best running shoe shop I’ve been to. They will find the perfect pair of running shoes for you, and they aren’t even ridiculously expensive. As Sam says, they have treadmills for you to properly try the shoes, but this is not all they’re for! You put a pair on and run for a few minutes on the treadmill, whilst they video your legs with a special camera. They use this footage to work out the angle at which your feet incline. This means that if your feet slope one way or the other, you can get a pair of running shoes to correct this. It means you wont be doing any harm to your ankles as you run. Absolutely unbelievable service. You may think you don’t need this because you ‘run normally’ but you may well be surprised. If you’re going to do any serious running then make sure you go here. Its invaluable not only to have a good pair of shoes, but to have the right ones for you.

If you’re a serious runner, and getting splashed by water from cars driving through puddles as you run on dreary pavements, running up the side of a mountain, wearing short shorts, losing a toenail or two, being ridiculously fit and filling a camel pack with energy drinks and not beer are all your kind of thing, then you’ve probably already heard of Up and Running. Up and Running is tucked away at the top of the Triangle shopping centre, and it’s a serious running shop for serious runners. They even have a couple of treadmills so that trying on some running shoes involves actually properly trying them out, rather than just doing that classic ‘shoe shop walk’ that we’ve all done in our time. What’s more, you’ll be trying on some running shoes that one of Up and Running’s knowledgeable assistants have chosen specifically for you and your running style. Up and Running also sell reflective jackets, running watches and protein shakes, as well as lots of other running gizmos.
