Recently I bought my favoured fudge and shortbread at the Manchester Piccadilly store but those were the worst I ever got. Not only that one of them was almost at the best-before date it was not at all the Thorntons qualitiy I’m used to. The fudge was fluffy and the shortbread tasted mouldy, much worse than the same one I got from Salisbury before. I can’t believe it.

Thornton’s, famous for amazing chocolate. Literally famous nationwide for wonderful chocolate. The only problem is, the chocolate isn’t nice. In fact, apart from a few people with a fetishistic attachment to those dark chocolate coated stem ginger things, I haven’t even ever met anyone who thought Thornton’s was really nice. So how the devil have they done it eh? Probably people are just buying the brand so that the recipients of their gifts know they’ve had a lot of money spent on their rubbish present. Personally I think less of the person who buys me them because I don’t think wasting money is anything to be proud of. Nuff respect to those whose Easter presents consist of a big fat bar of dairy milk.

Thortons, the ultimate chocolate destination for people who want to pick up carefully crafted chocolates as gifts or maybe their own luxurious consumption. Whatever the case, Thorntons serves that purpose. Only problem, it isn’t a Lindt store or some exotic chocolate brand and painful as this may sound to some, it does not taste that great either. They’re just pretty to look at and to enjoy in big boxes. The price that is charged is not worth it for the chocolates, I’d rather buy a Twirl and savour that!

Although I freely admit to being a sugar fiend, I don’t have any particular love of Thornton’s. That could be because I’m not a massive chocolate fan in general, or because it’s mostly overpriced and not as tasty as Cadbury’s, say. I’ll let you decide. The certainly do a large variety of chocolates but it all seems a little bit pretentious and over the top. I prefer much more basic affairs, and if I’m honest, I don’t rate the flavour that highly either. I can see the market they’re going for, and it certainly isn’t me, so I guess this is one shop I must just politely wave at as I pass on my way.

Thorntons are the chocolate equivalent of Keane. They’ve been around a long time. They’ve had a couple of best sellers. & they’re guaranteed to go down well with aunties and uncles. The problem is, nobody loves them or lies awake dreaming about them. We all prefer Green and Black and Radiohead.
