i went into order my tuna jacket as usual £3 but thought I would make it slightly healthier this time by adding salad to it (literally a spot of lettuce, cucumber and sweetcorn - also asked for onion which they didn't put on. to my astonishment it went from £3 to £6 !! as they explained they charge for the lettuce £1, 4 slices of cucumber £1 and sweetcorn £1 !! wow. wont be going back how cheeky !

Cheap, easy and lots of variety. My usual is a cheese and beans jacket in the winter or another of my favourites the chicken, cheese and red onion panini. All around and under £3 a pop. As per it gets busy around peak lunch time but always nice and fast service. You have to wait with a number for some of the hot food such as the wraps or burgers — funnily enough they don’t give you one for the paninis which always confuses me! So make sure you remember what you have ordered(yes that has happened to me before…) Shirley is the lovely lady behind the counter and as far as I can tell the rest of her staff are family — these guys do well enough though its always jam packed!

Shirley’s? How warming to the heart. This lady’s taken the time to prepare your sandwiches. The same vibe carries through for your grand entrance. Shirley’s does super cheap lunches for when you’re counting the pennies as seems to be common during these economically credit crunching times. When I last visited there were jacket potatoes for £1.10 and bacon sandwiches for a pound! Really can’t argue with that. As cited before shirley’s is also one of those fighting the mainstream locals as well, so all in all a good un. Every variety of lunch and breakfast is catered for in Shirley’s as well so whether you pull into early morning before the office hours you can pick up a cheap fry up then return at lunch for some soup. Wonderful.

Shirleys is one of a multitude of sandwich shops in the heart of the city centre, catering for the breakfasting and lunching needs of office workers from nearby banks, law firms and council workers alike. A mere hop, skip and jump from the scenery of Albert Square, Shirleys provides the usual range of breakfast foods(read toast, bacon, eggs and sausages(also on Toast)) through to made-to-order sarnies, jacket spuds and rather tasty soups. They occasionally offer ridiculously cheap promos(such as bacon on toast for £1), and have catered meetings at my work with platters of high quality butties at competitive prices. My personal fave is the chicken and bacon baguette with salad, washed down with a cup of their chicken and veg soup… perfect for keeping out the cold! The fact that it survives being flanked by a Greggs bakers, and often has queues out the door past its outdoor seating on Brazennose Street is further testament to the quality of its wares! Long live the independent butty shop!
