Satans Shallow This place really wasn’t ready for the closing of the close by Jillys Rock world and growing pains are abundant. Sometimes I feel as though this place should be gutted and redone with a new design philosophy. The décor, though commendable in terms of effort, is a hard sell on satanic, dark and sinister vibes but ultimately comes off as trying to hard. An almost children’s dress up party vibe sinks in the more you focus closely on the poorly constructed sculpture work. What are we trying to achieve with this again? The clubs integrity is further damaged by its push towards more screamo, pop punk tunes which feels contrived towards angsty female teens which in turn other angsty male teens often follow. I consistently see many outright tragic dating attempts leading to groups of black out drunk beta males headbutting each other. Great for business a pity to watch. Not that the female clientel seem much better as there is often a anxious vibe that makes one feel the girls would be horrified if a stranger spoke to them. They have made an extra room to subdue the more hardcore rock fans criticisms of the place but it feels almost like an awkward cloak room. Which reminds me can we please stop charging a £ to hold my jacket it feels like robbery everytime, not to mention the poor girl who has to sit there all night like poor little moomin. In terms of the basics you can expect very low standards from piss and vomit everywhere to greasy walls. The staff seem vacant, angry and underpaid which apparent understaffing doesn’t help. Credit to the boucers on hand though they are often alert and helpful in the pit and I have witnessed them save many a drunk female from dying in a corner. Lastly the DJs are some of the worst in Manchester and truly have zero understand of pacing and track sequencing. Often you will see the club get hyped over a popular track only for the rooms energy to be abruptly destroyed by the next pertaining zero synergy or relation to the last, very poor. Ultimately I think you can understand why this club, like its guests, ironically doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. As mentioned briefly I would gut the place out and modernize it, driving towards a serious attempt a contemporary rock club the likes of which Manchester could truly get behind. If no attempts to evolve are made you may aswell replace that ridiculous satan with a twilight vampire and what a tragedy that would be.

This was the punk rock after party after the Bouncing Souls played their Manchester show. It was also my metal friend’s birthday. What a PERFECT place for him. If you actually care what you’re drinking, you’re doomed here. My first conversation with a bartender when we arrived was: «Do you have wine?» «No.» “Do you have gin?” «Yeah.» “Okay. Gin and tonic?” «We don’t have tonic» So! I drank gin and soda water allll night. File that under Bad Decisions 2013. My friends and their fans all seemed to have a fun time. The music was amazing, the bouncers totally cool and service was quick. I think there’s usually a cover but we didn’t have to pay it. So! Have that noted. To the pudgy lady hip-hop/sexy dancing: NO. METALISFORTHRASHING not for bump’n’grind garbage. Please take note for the future.

Wow… it’s been too long since I did a review(God I’ve been busy with shizzle) but don’t fear Unilocal!Your mediocre reviews and opinions are coming over the horizon for you to sink your teeth in to. So yea, a couple of weeks ago me and my mate ended up in here on the hunt for the«loo»(resulting in the most expensive pee we’ve ever experienced) Fortunately, we ended up in this great metal club. I must admit… I’m a fan. Everyone was insanely friendly, especially the staff(Doormen/bar staff) and I truly enjoyed my short time here. The whole place looked great. I’m not entirely sure how many floors they have, but I was in what I believe was the main floor. I loved the whole Gothic look that was displayed, a vault behind the bar, a huge demon/devil statue overlooking the DJ booth — Awesome! What I also loved was the dance floor(I DON’T DANCE!!) but from what I could see, there was a lot of headbanging, shuffling, and slight dancing(and of course, everyone was singing along to Bön Jovi) Overall, a great place to check out :) I can’t see anything that might turn people way(Excluding the music choice) and I would definitely recommend someone to check it out, because I’m certainly going back. (Drinks are your average«Club» price, and when I was there, entry was £4)

Satan’s Hollow is definitely requiring of a certain type of night out to satisfy your drunkenness and antic radar. It is full of moshing students head banging along to their favourite heavy metal ditty or sometimes rock song and being injured in a mosh pit is definitely part of the night’s out atmosphere. The free bar between 10 and 11 is definitely another perk but its definitely for those normally of mostly male gender and a passion for heavy music. Not my thing, but definitely had a good night there once or twice in a large group.

Quite possibly my favourite rock club in Manchester. The layout is cool(there is a massive Satan behind the DJ deck in the main room), the drinks here are a good price. There are 2 rooms, the main room and the side room(Krypt) which is usually only open on Fridays and Saturdays. Music is quite varied these days. You do hear rock/metal but you also get pop punk, rap/hip hop and dance(that’s usually saved for the end of the night when everyone’s drunk and don’t care — plus goths moshing to dance music is quite amusing). The kind of people who come here? Mostly rockers, though there usually is the odd chav/emo/tart/weirdo but I guess you get that everywhere. People here are alright, some nights people are sociable, other nights not so. The toilets are bogging. The girls toilets are tiny and almost always run out of loo roll so either take some when you arrive there or bring some with you beforehand. There have been occasions where they’ve had to close off one cubicle because some classy bint decided to throw up all over the place(there was one occasion where a girl was sat in the toilets eating a large packet of Doritos and threw up all over the place). Going to toilet here on a busy night can be pure hell as the queue can get long and girls like to take ages in the toilets. Overall, decent place and maybe one of the only few rock clubs/club nights still around.

I have a had a love/hate relationship with Satans for a number of years perhaps I should start at the beginning. Since I was 16 I was dragged to a combination of Garrett, Overdraught and 5th Ave/42nd Street. I was then asked by a girl mate of mine if I fancied Satans Hollow? The name alone intrigued me so off I went. I got in for £3 a steal from 5th Ave haha! I ascended up the stairs and was greeted by a huge devil on the wall and krypt looking walls while being blasted by Disturbed Down with the sickness. This is the place I belonged too, after that I told 5th ave to get lost and 42s to shove it and made this my regular haunt. I came here every tuesday & Friday for years always impressed by the music free bar and crowd. However when the emo trend took hold the place began to change it started filling with scene kids and the DJ started playing Lady Gaga and other nonsence. Now if you like this music go to Deansgate locks I’m sure it will be more your taste but this is supposed to be a rock club! I then visited less frequently and only really came to support mates in bands or for someones birthday. I hope it changes again one day so I can go enjoy it once more however I feel I will be too old to attend when that day comes so I say temporary farewell to the hollow. I hope I did you proud!

One of the many competing rock clubs in Manchester City Centre but the difference is that it survives! How? By not falling in to the trap like every other modern rock club does — playing two hours of dubstep and beyonce… Whilst we all enjoy a bit of a sped up beat for a couple of songs, Satans doesn’t take advantage of that position and plays relevant upbeat music — for example pendulum — and then returning to some more pop punk. This is perfect for a good night out at 2−3am when people are feeling the effects of tiredness or alcohol wearing off — music to have a happy bop to! The DJ clearly knows the feel to the room, playing music to everyone’s mood. I swear once I saw a group of people getting irritated at some others nearby and the mood slowly spreading… A minute later limp bizkit’s break stuff came on! Instead of having an adverse effect, the two groups joined in screaming the lyrics at each other and laughing afterwards!!! Whilst doing this the DJ also manages to fit in all requests given to him :) Oh and did I mention the doormen are some of the funniest i’ve met? If you have a laugh with them, they’ll remember you every time you go :) The place has a main room and a minor room with two huge bars in the main room and relevant décor to the name: p worth a picture with some friends in the crypt! From pop punk to emo to rock to nu-metal to punk to metal to screamo to hardcore to more or less anything in the rock genre, you won’t miss out on any favourite tracks — make sure you request them to avoid missing out!

I found the 2nd room(thankfully) before leaving. In this room they played some Metallica, etc. In the main room(though the décor is really cool and playfully«demonic») the music was sugar pop-punk. I could have died. I’m 21 and I think I was the oldest person in attendance. This place would be so cool if they played some actual rock music. Instead of New Found Glory, maybe some Black Sabbath?!(which I requested but never heard) The drink selection is also terrible. Carlsberg it is…

I’ve been to a couple of club nights here which led me to dub it Satans Emo… not very nice:(.But i have been to a couple of gigs here and had a really good night(Impaled Nazarene 06). The stage set up is a bit bizzare seeing as its in the middle of the floor. But it does give you a full view of the band especially if you have a thing for drummers backs :)

Satan’s Hollow is a hilarious place. You walk in and it’s like being smacked around the head with a shovel, then dragged into a ghost train at a rubbish fair. There’s hooded figures with flashing eyes and a cage near the dancefloor where listless teens slump in S shapes, slurping cheap lager. Behind the DJ booth is a gigantic Lucifer with flashing red eye-balls. I wouldn’t be surprised if I found out that it blew dry-ice from the nostrils. Really, this ludicrous place has to be seen to be believed. It’s like someone watched From Dusk ‘Til Dawn and figured that the world actually needed a club full of randy vampires. There’s two rooms and they play all kinds of music, focusing on emo, punk and rock… all that stuff that the devil likes(though, I have a sneaking suspicion that Beelzebub likes James Blunt… but that’s a whole other article). The toilets are dark and borderline grim… but you don’t mind too much as, the moment you leave them, you’re thrust into a ludicrous world of funfair horror. Ridiculous and wonderful. You’ll laugh your tits off!

Do *not* be put off by the name. This place is not half as scary as the name suggests. I used to go to the Body Bag night on Saturdays(again, not as scary as it sounds). There were no ‘emos’ or boys with eyeliner and floppy fringes, just normal-looking people who enjoyed rock music. The music on this night was not as heavy as Jilly’s, Rock Kitchen or the Ritz and they played a lot of music that you wouldn’t normally hear in clubs such as Interpol’s ‘Evil’. The décor is amazing, there are plenty of seats around the edge and the dance floor is small, meaning that there is always a good atmosphere even if the place isn’t packed. Years ago, they used to have one night with a completely free bar, but it looks like this has just turned into a free bar between 10 and 11 on Tuesdays. If the government have their way then it looks like this will also be a thing of the past, so make the most of it whilst you still can! They also host a number of live band nights, promo nights(recently Rob Zombie and Lost Prophets) and after show parties. Their website doesn’t seem to be working at the moment, but you can find out details of upcoming nights and events by joining their facebook group.

Well, this is an interesting little place. It’s a bit like the younger brother of Jilly’s; tries to imitate his older sibling, but has a slightly more modern taste in music and clothing, and likes to cut himself more. Where Jilly aims more for the old rockers chasing after their forgotten youth and the younger rockers who can unfortunately remember theirs, Satan’s Hollow decides to shoot for a slightly wider audience with the emo market. They seem to be open all the time, with a wide, wide variety of nights on, but as other reviewers have pointed out if you don’t really like the emo scene then you should probably steer clear. As one of the aforementioned young-but-wishes-he-was-old rockers, I favour the playlist in Jilly’s more, but I appreciate the presence of Satan’s nonetheless. Anywhere that furthers the banner of metal is alright in my book.

Satans Hollow reminds me of a time I wish I could forget. We all act silly when we’re young, this club provided me a place to act silly. It’s all their fault, they used to do this night where you paid £10 door entry and then it was free drinks all night… FREEDRINKSALLNIGHT! I was 18 at this time and only needed three drinks and I was a mess! They still do the open bar thing on a Tuesday but only for one hour and it’s completely rammed, the drinks are cheap anyway so it’s not really worth bothering with, it was just a novelty when we were younger. This venue is all about the music, it is very heavy. If you don’t like Metal or Ska, you will not like this place. They play the occasional pop song but it’s only to take the mic out of it so seriously, if you are in not into the music, you will have the worst night ever! The décor in here is amazing. Cages, demons, skulls… it’s literally Halloween every night in there. The toilets are the worst in any club in Manchester. Awful. Worth going to at least once just to see what it’s like.

I can’t help but think they should rename this club thanks to that fantastic trailer in Tropic Thunder for a Brokeback Mountain-esque film about gay priests entitled ‘Satan’s Alley’. Robert Downey Jr and Tobey Maguire aside, this is one of those clubs you’ve got to experience at least once, and you’ll either love it or hate it. While it’s generally a rock club you get an eclectic mix, with Wednesdays being ‘Seduction’ nights with Bangra music, Bollywood beats and Arabic, and Friday’s ‘Roadkill’, incorporating aftershow parties and record promotions. But perhaps for the most authentic Satan’s experience, take in a Tuesday ‘Spiked’ night. From 10−11pm there’s a free bar, or as it’s better known, the get-as-many-as-you-can-in hour. Vickie and I have carried each other out of there plenty of times after a night of dancing and merriment. And there, you can get the joy that is white chocolate Corky’s. And Crème Egg Corky’s. The décor in the place is just hilarious. Strange carvings, gargoyles, creative seating arrangements — you feel like you’re in a strange hybrid of Hell, a witch’s cave and Peter Stringfellow’s basement. Which, to some, could all mean the same thing. A note of warning though. The hard rockers and headbangers of Jilly’s Rockworld might want to steer clear. The music can get quite poppish and the crowd at Satan’s comprises of young emo scenesters with fringes over their eyes, lip piercings and skinny jeans. There’s a lot of bunches and ribbon bows flying around. And that’s just the boys. Go in there wearing heels and you’ll feel like everyone’s mother unless you’ve got knee socks on with them. That goes for nice shirt, universal Dad, etc. I’d advise band t-shirts and Converse, stripes and stars. Oh, and eyeliner. LOTS of eyeliner. And that tip is ESPECIALLY for the boys.

Not a favourite of mine but writing about Satan’s Hollow does bring back memories of the sixth form days when friends of mine(the ones with dyed hair and piercings) would drag us here. I can’t remember what night it used to be but the Hollow definitely caters for that emo crowd that likes to be a bit scenester and shops at Afflecks. The music policy is actually much more diverse in this little place: they put on live music fairly regularly on Sundays. Its mainly punk, rock and heavy metal though which you know, has its own charm to dance/rock out to. Never mind handbags in the middle of the circle, if you even bring a handbag you’ll be lucky if you have it by the end of the night you’ll be dancing so violently from all the cheap drinks they ply you with.

As you can probably guess by the mane this place is not somewhere you should turn up to in your best party dress ready for a night of light dancing and girl fun. This is a place to rock your little socks of. Quite a small bar but I think it added to the atmosphere of this place, grungy and dingy. Really cheap drinks and a good laugh if your out with a group. You will find no pretentiousness here, its rough around the edges!

Not the shrinking violet that the name would suggest(man, why can’t these places be more upfront?!) but rather a raucous, booze and hormone fuelled live music venue habituated by students who don’t do Kanye ‘look at me, look at me’ West. What makes the Hollow stand out is the effort it puts into its events list. Unlike so many other indie club/bars it is not enough to simply open the doors and stick the Killers on, not on your Nelly! Monday is ever changing, Tuesday is spiked Punk vs Metal, Wednesday is Seduction– bollwood, bangra & r’n’b, Thursday is Bomb Ibiza– ska and punk, Friday is Roadkill, metal, punk, emo and hardcore, Saturday is ‘Body Bag’ which plays rockabilly bop and Sunday… Sunday?! For Christ’s sake are you people never satisfied!!!

Holy posing scenester batman! If you like wearing the same studded belt, drainpipe jeans and band t-shirts as everyone else, whilst professing how much of an individual you are, then this is the place for you! A few years ago, Satan’s was an OK night out. The music was a mixture of metal and rock and the free bar was a good reason to go. Now, it mainly seems to play emo/indie music, which I hate. Full of posers

One of the few clubs in Manchester with dedicated Rock /Metal nights. Body Bag is on Saturday night which features a mix of rock, metal, indie and alternative music. The venue is quite small with a tiny disk of a dance floor in the centre and it is decorated to look like hell with demons and devils decorating the walls. Drinks are cheap and entry is also reasonable although Manchester taxis can be expensive and hard to find at the end of the night. If you are looking for a cheap night out and an alternative to pretentious trendy venues then Satans Hollow is a good choice.

Great live music venue and club in the city centre! Various nights on and open all week– Monday is different every week, Tuesday is spiked Punk vs Metal, Wednesday is Seduction– bollwood, bangra & r’n’b, Thursday is Bomb Ibiza– ska and punk, Friday is Roadkill, metal, punk, emo and hardcore, saturday is Body Bag any old type of rock night and sunday is the all dayer gig day. The venue itself has been decorated like its hell, demons, fire and weird stuff on the walls and a giant devil behind the dj booth– I heard the cost was in the millions! Drinks are reasonably priced! It’s usually full of scenesters!
