One of the two canals that run east out of Manchester, the Rochdale Canal heads out from the Piccadilly Basin area, just like the Ashton Canal, but then twists and heads north towards Rochdale as it goes out of Manchester. The Rochdale Canal is steeped in history. Forming part of the South Pennine ring and open to navigation along its entire length of 33 miles, the canal was opened in 1804 and was the first trans-Pennine canal route. The areas of the canal in central Manchester now are somewhat underwhelming, as some of the sections towards central Manchester a nothing short of full of rubbish and in need of a good clean. I’m looking forward to following the canal out to the countryside when the weather gets a bit nicer and seeing if’s any better outside of Manchester.
