Having being told about how they do custom only work and can work from nothing or from tons of research. When I went in however I was treated like this is my first tattoo and I was young punk kid with no idea of the art-form. The guy I met was nice but it felt like he just wanted to get rid of me and told me to come back with more research and he would piece something together from it. The thing was I had the idea in my head and could not find any reference material on-line or in any books I researched so visual material was not really an option. The environment felt very cold and I did not feel comfortable the short time I was there. Maybe I caught the dude on the off day or I put out the wrong vibe either way I ended up in the hands of Billy at afflecks palace who has created a great sleeve for me: D.

Lawrence is a consummate professional and a good guy. He tattooed 2 hours of my right arm sleeve and about 5 hours on a friend’s backpiece when we were in the UK in 2005 for the end of our graduate studies. His hand is light, his lines are clear, and he’s a funny, nice, professional guy. I don’t love the closed-in feel of the back room feeling in the actual room. There was only room for one of my friends to be in there with me at a time. because I am accustomed to the open shop I go to in the US, the setup of the shop was my only not-totally-positive feeling. Excellent experience. Definitely talk to Lawrence for your Manchester tattoo needs.

I’m not tattooed myself, though I have plenty of friends who run the gamut from ‘just a small tattoo on my ankle’ to ‘just a small patch of skin on my ankle’, and I have heard nothing but good things about Red Sea from the latter so it must be decent. They offer a range of services and apparently make the whole process fun and as pain-free as possible, which is no small feat for a procedure which is essentially injecting paint under your skin. The artistry is good as well, which is pretty important when you are having a semi-permanent picture put on your body. The last thing you want is a sweet-ass picture of Wolverine turning into a stooped old man with droopy fingers( ).

A studio doing some outrageous things with ink and skin. A mate had a dragon done by Laurence of red sea once. Very professional apparently this bloke knows his stuff and can do some mind bending drawings. If you can think it up it can be replicated. Me if I was ever to get a tattoo would probably go here, the spot is registered with health professionals. Additionally the guys are passionate about their artwork and can give you some great suggestions.

Je t’aime Red Sea Tattoos. Having been inked at a handful of different tattoos studios both sides of the pond, I’ve gotta say the tattooist I can imagine myself returning to over and over would be Lawrence at Red Sea. As well as designing and inking a beautiful pair of Japanese sleeves for my arms, I was blown away by his knowledge, skill, passion and enthusiasm. Every process of the experience from my initial consultation to the three four hour sessions I had at his studio seemed smooth and effortless. What’s more, he played a great selection of music from Patti Smith to Amy Winehouse, encouraged me to keep taking small breaks and made me laugh during the really painful bits — like elbows, shoulder blades and bones! If you’re interested in getting something done by Lawrence or one of his protegees, they are available for face to face consultations between 11−12am most days. Check the website for individual schedules.
