Placed right beside 5th Ave, this place finally pulled me in when I was tired of waiting out in the cold, for over an hour and half to get into 5th Ave’s friday night! It gave me a warmer alternative than the obvious standing out though my heart still wanted to enter 5th Ave very very much! The reluctance and disappointment soon turned into tuned fun and games! The bar was fairly crowded playing a mix of chart music and the Indie which I thoroughly love. It kept it going and the drinks were pretty great as well– £2.70 for a double vod-bull. What was amazing about this place was its very casual approach in terms of looks, more like a den you would hang out at, and the arcades it had! Being drunk and giving a go at pool was the peak. It made the night the epitome of fun watching people trying to reach stability at some point to try and get some balls! The crowd was obviously all the people, who like me, got tired of the queue outside. I personally had a great time and think one should definitely try it as an alternative!

This is a strange bar/club, which probably does draw much of its clientele from those who cannot get into 5th Avenue. Why people want to go to 5th Avenue I don’t know, but I also know that I’d rather be there than in Overdraught. The music changes from night to night but the unifying characteristic is that its too loud. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an old man, its just that the level of music should be in an appropriate proportion to the number of people in the club, and here it isn’t. Its also very grimy. Having said that, its not bad price wise and they are open till very very late(I’ve heard 4am, though I never stay out that late, honestly not an old man…). If you do like the music then you’d probably find it a pretty good place. For that reason, i’m going for a moderate review.

I can’t help but feel that Overdraught should simply be called Overflow, as the people who oft venture within are almost certainly the ones who couldn’t get into 5th Ave and are still desperate to make something of their night. It sweeps up the remainder of the Manchester collective like a giant hoover, swirling them all together in a typhoon of cheap shots and sticky floors. It’s not that bad whenever I’ve been in there pricewise, but it always felt like a graveyard. I guess low prices aren’t all you need to actually do well in the student market. Having some class probably helps.
