It’s a cool little club. Good for seeing bands especially Hardcore or Metal bands (mostly those of heavier genres). It has the right underground atmosphere one of those clubs from an old movie, or something you read about in books. In short cool place, nicely-placed stage, great sound, good selection at bar, friendly staff, clean-ish toilets, close parking, easy to get to, cheap tickets/fees. Great for a night out. Recently renovated.

I went to a private event– a Medics vs Dentists vs Nurses MDT End of Exams Best of British event– at Moho last night and had a fantastic time! It was dark, it was grimy, it was sticky– it was exactly what I was looking for in a last hurrah with all my friends in Manchester. The DJ was a 5th ave DJ(gotta love it– just writing«5th ave» makes me feel like I’m a teenager again, swigging vodka for the first time and dancing like a dickhead with my mates) so that was a win. I think there were special drinks deals on — four jaegerbombs/glitterbombs for £5– mental! The service was always quick and efficient– nice to see a bar hiring enough staff for once! And when we drank all of their Jaegermeister, bless them, they went out and got us some more!(Which we drank, of course.) My only complaint would be that it was a bit too hot– I mean I’m all for getting dirty and sweaty on a grimy night out but this was a bit too face/waterfall for(even) me. And they were a bit off about serving water, despite the aforementioned face/waterfall effect we were all suffering. And the toilets were clean. Much appreciated. It’s nice to be able to go to the toilet without having to dodge the vomit-covered toilets. Must visit on a gig night. It’s on my to-do list.

Manchester likes to keep it in the family. Chorlton’s bars seem to all be related somehow, similar things have happened with the Northern Quarter, and as a rule, if I like somewhere, I generally like its sister. It’s happened with Dough and Apotheca, Socio, Keko, Home Sweet Home and Almost Famous, and now it’s happened with The Northern and Moho Live. I just don’t go to enough gigs. I caught some great ones at Soup Kitchen and Ruby Lounge recently(Team Me and Motion City Soundtrack respectively… both awesome) and I remember being annoyed that I’d missed New Young Pony Club at Moho like the twonk that I am a year or so back, but hopefully Pete Docherty’ll play again soon. I’ve been looking for somewhere to throw the decomposing orbs in my fruit bowl. Did anyone ever see the documentary where he had his cats take over a whole room in his house and allowed them to go ‘feral’ while he writhed in a pile of his own dirt composing ‘poems’ and stuffing drugs in every orifice? Man, that was awesome. And awful. I digress… Moho’s a great venue. It’s exactly what you’d want from a good, rowdy gig — minimal décor, a bit grimy, hot and sweaty and the sort of place you really want to go to until you arrive and think, ‘Why am I doing this again? I’ll only end up smelling horrible.’ That tickbox also extends to festivals. But it’s got character and it’s in the NQ, two things I really like. The space itself is divided into two rooms, one for live artists and one for DJs. I’m not saying a DJ isn’t a ‘live artist’, unless I’m talking about so-called efforts of celebrity ‘DJs’… I’m just saying that’s the way the club’s worked out, big woop, wanna fight about it? Considering it’s owned by a veteran DJ it’s only understandable that Moho works both as a gig venue and a nightclub. On club nights the two rooms offer different genres, and the Saturday indie night Propaganda is bang on the money; something a bit different and it’s inexpensive, there are great tunes and it’s a fab place to bring a group of mates or your beau for a bit of a boogie. The staff are dedicated, the venue’s superb and all the requirements for a good night out are in place. So find a band you like or simply pop along for the indie night and you’ll be in for a treat.

Cool little bar especially for gigs. I have seen Yashin here and Deaf Havana and its great intimate gig place to see young up-coming bands close and personal. Plus hang out with them afterwards because of the relaxed atmosphere. It’s a cellar like bar with 2 rooms but still feels very cramped. The drink prices are expensive which is why I usually stick to one or two pepsi’s while watching the bands then go somewhere else to relax and hang out with friends.

Just your average, smaller concert venue. Black walls, fliers, and a very long bar. One of the bartenders absolutely hated serving me water, but aside from that my experience here was fine. I went to see a show, and the sound was fine. The venue is whatever, nothing special, but big enough to sell alot of concert tickets, and hip enough to book some decent acts. No snacks–

When at home, Propaganda Birmingham is one of my favourite nights out, primarily for it’s laid-back low-maintenance fun atmosphere and of course, good music. Therefore I had high expectations for Manchester’s own Propaganda night at Moho Live on a Saturday. However, the two places are difficult to compare, if at all. The word that strikes me first when thinking of walking into the venue for the first time was ‘moody’. It’s in a basement, very dark lighting, stone floors and it feels somewhat ‘close’ as though you’re not quite sure how people are going to fit in there. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing, is it? It certainly wasn’t difficult to find your friends when you got lost(handy, since I am a drunken wanderer) and dancefloor fills up pretty quickly. It did start to become a bit of a squeeze at one point, but this is not entirely dissimilar to most places. Music tends to be pretty central to my enjoyment of a night out. And in this respect I was certainly not disappointed. The venue comprises two rooms: the main one plays«the best current and classic indie alternative music» whilst the second, much smaller room plays more electro notes. I was a bit worried because not all of my friends were more chart-huggers than classic-indie-alternative-nuts like me, but the music is so fun-loving and easy to dance to that they loved it — and are already asking to take them back. With regard to bar prices… I can’t remember the specifics but it wasn’t expensive. But they weren’t massively student-friendly prices either, somewhere in the middle. All in all, it was a very fun night, but it does seem to be a bit pretentious compared to the laid back fun of Propaganda Birmingham. I think another outing will be needed to fully make up my mind.

«Mohos» not to be mistaken with Mojos or Nohos, seems to be frequented by a group of us now and again for a bit of a change when a bit of grime and some dirty Indie is called for. Forget 42s and The Venue, so old school now. Times have changed and this Northern Quarter dive is perfect from rolling from one of my fave bars down the road when it’s time for a dance and some cheap drinks. Mohos has a large walled in smoking/fresh air/I feel like being sick area at its front. A bit like a large drive away or a school playground. So when you’re queueing to get in, or lost your mates downstairs you can come up for a breather and get a taste of Mohos outdoors as there’s a strange slight buzz with those choosing to hang out upstairs. The venue itself I find fascinating. Why is there a classic red phone box randomly placed in the main dance room? Chuckle every time. There’s two bars and two rooms. In the main room you’ll find the dance area with the larger stage where the live bands play at odd times during the week. This is where you’ll find the packed out crowd at the Saturday student night, Propaganda. Then there’s the smaller room which has a smaller area for a band to be showcased. Mohos gets sweaty as girls and boys alike get their dance on as the music is spot on. There is often a variety of classics of old and new, popular and more obscure. I like the surprise clutching my can of Red Stripe, it seems quite natural to be drinking from a can in public in here! Everyone in here is quite chilled out which means it’s always a laugh. I’ve yet to attend a gig here but Mohos lures an extensive and impressive list of bands and artists here from Pete Doherty, New Young Pony Club, The Futureheads, Young Knives, to name a few up and coming ones. Check out the Aftershow on a Friday also. If not enjoy the club nights at Mohos, not to be missed.

Moho live darling. Neatly tucked away in the backstreets of the northern quarter is one of the coolest music scenes around. The place is small and can be rammed, on busy nights with a big act playing such as ghostface killa expect to be stood outside for a little while. Inside the bar is big and the staff quick off the mark to serve you. A few good bands play moho because it tips towards the less vulgar mainstream you can find at the academy etc. The interior reminds me slightly of a crack den but hay its a 5 minute walk away from piccadily station, so if you’re coming into Manchester for a night out or to see someone its a cheap shindig.

I’m too old for 5th Ave and went to 42nd Street so many times that it all feels a bit over familiar. I’m not a huge fan of the Venue. So I was really glad when I was introduced to Propaganda — the weekly indie night at Moho Live. For those of us who’d probably rather be in a rock club, but whose friends prefer indie, they do play quite a bit of rock(think QOTSA and Rage) towards the beginning of the night, which then changes to more traditional indie(think the Killers and Oasis), then when the dance floor fills up they tend to play some more dancey tracks(think Hot Chip, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Room 2 is for electro-heads though it can get rather sweaty in there. The main room also hosts celebrity DJs. Bloc Party will be in residence on 6th March. The crowd is possibly a bit older than the 42s crowd, and a little more sedate than at 5th Ave. There are plenty of seats and even a Guitar Hero area for the dance floor shy. You won’t find any ridiculously cheap drinks offers like at 5th Ave, but £1.50ish for a cool flippy-cappy bottle of Tuborg isn’t going to break the bank. I imagine that this is a great gig venue, but like Elliot, haven’t really found anything that appeals to me among GLC and Stone Roses tribute acts. However, Idlewild and the Bluetones are coming up later in the year, so I’ll definitely be back. Note to self — do not cover yourself in facepaint and straw(see profile pic) this time, as it can get unbearably warm in there!

I thought this was a decent place to see a band. The acoustics were fairly good, there was a nice sized bar(no trouble getting served quickly and friendly staff) and the band started on time, unlike some other venues I could mention. I think it depends what you want from a gig really, but for me it was a more pleasant experience than some gigs at the academy, which absolutely rammed with people who aren’t necessarily bothered about seeing the band but are just there to say they were at the gig…

So Moho is Manchester’s newest successful indie club. As in I mean it’s in the same lot as 42nd Street and 5th Avenue. I hadn’t been until I ended up going for a gig a few months ago… one of my favourite bands were on so I went along with my sister… I heard a lot about the club nights so I was expecting and amazing night… it wasn’t fantastic. The main room is pretty small and I kinda feel that the venue got greedy and sold too many tickets because it was unbelievably packed. Luckily I love crowds at gigs, my sister wasn’t as happy especially as we were at the front!!! Anyway despite Moho having a free indie club night on after the gig, we were so ready to get out of there we headed to 42s!!! I’ve been again since to a couple of club nights and to a few«secret gigs», something Moho has got pretty well known for hosting. It’s been good but these gigs are held in the smaller room… it’s ridiculous how small this room is, add a stage for a band and far too many people and it’s just a joke but again, it’s a gig and you can get away with cramming people in. What they shouldn’t be able to get away with is the lack of air conditioning. 42’s used to be like this years ago and people went mental until they eventually invested in some, the same thing needs to happen in Moho. The lead singer of the band the other day stopped to say he was so hot he thought he was going to die. He was probably exaggerating but Moho — get a clue!

I hadn’t been to Moho Live until this week and considering I did not know what to expect from the exterior and what I’d heard, I really liked it. As my friend and I were arriving, a lot of people seemed to be leaving but they all had instruments so they must have just been the bands we had already missed — starting on the dot at half seven it seems. There is one main bar area and stage with another smaller room(VERY sweaty when even two thirds full, eurgh) to the left as you walk down the stairs and along a short corridor. I didn’t like that the floor was SO sticky even as we arrived at nine o clock but other than that, the inside didn’t look so bad. Pretty grungey but with some cool art work on the walls. Also, as we sat on a sofa it didn’t help things that due to the weird layout and where the stairs were nearly everyone’s view of the stage was blocked either because they were facing the wrong way or not high enough. Plus everyone who thought they had a good spot on the stairs during the warm up bands were then turfed from this perch by the bouncer who proceeded to watch the whole set from there himself. Nice. They put on the indie club night Propaganda here and it is slowly gaining a special place in people’s club consciousness in addition to putting on some good live music. I didn’t like the girl on the door much, but maybe I just have high expectations.

Proving that atmosphere and attitude beats fancy décor every time, it’s Moho Live’s sheer friendliness and bravery in its listings that surely makes this one of Manchester’s top live music venues. Whilst other clubs like to play it safe by sticking to tried and tested formulas, Moho deserves top marks for venturing to the relative unknown. The fairly new concept of merging live band and club nights is something that Moho has jumped into with both feet, unconcerned by the obvious risks of two worlds colliding. It is a risk taken that has rewarded them handsomely as the place is full to capacity most weekends and with the formula still being tinkered with you can expect even better things to come.

This is a great venue for bands to play, big bar, nice size stage, plenty of room to dance, and I love the spray painted walls.

Don’t believe the hype. was expecting big things from the northern quarters new alternative club but the whole place was such a let down. their web site promises the world, the club delivers nothing. Had to queue in the rain even though i had paid for a queue jump ticket that said i’d b treated like a moho vip. Once in It wasn’t busy yet you couldn’t get served at the bar. the dj played the same song twice in the first hour. major refit i don’t think so unless your idea of a refit is to invite your mates around and let them loose with some spray paint. the light show that would put pink floyd to shame could have been done better with a few torches in my bedroom. all in all it was a thoroughly unpleasant experience left after just over an hour because the thought of queueing to get another drink filled me with dread. even when i tried to leave i was told by the cloakroom attendant to come back in 5 minutes because she was busy doing something else. no i want out now. don’t waste a night out here. one star and i’d want that back.

MoHo Live is quickly developing itself as THE music venue in Manchester. Hosting the infamous The Aftershow twice a month it is now hosting high profile events such as gigs by The View, Ghostface Killah, Starsailor plus so many more to come that i have heard about. Ideally located in the Northern Quarter on Tib St(in between Afflecks and Sachas Hitel/Debenhams) its easy to get to and from with Piccadilly bus and train station a stroll away. A great atmosphere, friendly staff — MoHo is tipped to be the place to be to catch live music and great bands!
