Chill out drink after the cinema at the mtre manchester. Massive place very deceiving from the outside. Not really impressed with this pub but the staff seem friendly.

Although the Mitre is nothing out of the ordinary, it does offer the perfect spot in which to catch some rays and soak up the buzz of Manchester’s shambles/cathedral area — one of the most picturesque corners of the city. If the weather’s good and you’re fortunate enough to grab a table in the slither of outdoor space down the side of the pub(facing Sinclair’s Oyster Bar), you’ll find the area something of a sun trap. So get your Piz Buin slathered on and enjoy! But be warned — the beer gardens in this neck of the woods fill up fast, especially over the weekend, so get there early to avoid disappointment or be ready to hang around waiting for a table to become free. Like I say, this pub isn’t anything spectacular so you won’t find any new or obscure beers. There’s certainly no Belgian cherry beer *sobs* so expect the usual brands. For me, it’s definitely all about the outside atmosphere and the setting.

Nice spot for a glass of wine in the summer evenings. Looks on to the beer gardens for a couple of other bars which makes for a nice lively atmosphere. One drawback is that the outdoor drinking area is fairly narrow so we had to move several times to let people through.

In the area of Manchester where people come out to play in the sun, which is why I had to come here instead of a pub next door I had originally intended to visit (too packed!) This is a posh. ish bar, not a pub pretty shiny purple seats are a big clue. Surprised to find ale to be honest Jennings Cumberland(OK) and Landlord.

Came here for a quick pre-gig pint because the Oyster Bar next door was too rammed to get through the door well, I say ‘quick’, but actually getting served took over 10 minutes thanks to not-particularly-speedy staff on duty and incredibly rude patrons pushing in at the bar. Not a massive selection of beers, but pleasant enough inside and usual city centre prices. But make sure you get a plastic glass if you’re drinking outside or you get followed out and made to decant it.

Aww, it’s such a shame for the Mitre. It does get a little overshadowed amongst the glorious, pretty likes of the Oyster Bar and the Wellington as it’s very much on the corner and to enter it you have to leave the beautiful little patio seated area of Exchange Square. And then you walk in. You’re expecting the same dark wood and cosy snugs surrounding homely folk with traditional ale, and what greets you is… well… honestly, I have to say it resembles some of the ’boutique’ hairdressers I stepped into in Liverpool. And those were tongue in cheek. The Mitre, all purple leopard print and ornate gold, is I’m afraid not. The high prices let it down too, as well as draught beers regularly running out. I heard testimonies tell me that the hotel rooms weren’t up to much, as if the staff have kind of forgotten about them, so it’s probably a good job they’ve been abandoned. It’s an okay place for a drink and a watch of the football or something, but it lacks the atmosphere, tradition and the fun of its two neighbours. It’s a great pity, as the Mitre’s a building steeped in character and has so much potential. Never mind. Next!

I really do love staying at this hotel. Mainly for the proximity to Victoria Station and the shops. It’s been about five years since I’ve stayed here, but, I loved being able to nurse quite a few damn pints till the early morning hours. I love the quirky layout of the rooms and the fact that it’s within crawling distance to Deansgate pubs. I am a tad sad to hear that the rooms are no longer, that really is a such a shame!

The Mitre Hotel has just reopened at Cathedral Gates. Its been closed for some time, though it used to be a decent competitor to The Old Wellington, the Crown and Anchor and Oyster Bar. Its had a bit of a re-vamp so perhaps it can resume its old success. No longer open as a hotel, the place is now just the bar it used to be, with some shiny new stuff. However, it does show the football, which is unusual for the centre of Manchester, and this may bring it some success. However, its also likely to bring match-day trouble to the bars around here, which often have to close early if Manchester United or Manchester City are playing(and definitely if they’re playing each other) because of trouble from the fans. This is bound to make The Mitre unpopular with other publicans, but whether it will please the customer remains to be seen.
