Foodwise, this place has a good range of normal food stuffs and also the asian flavour foods. The car park is relatively large for the size of supermarket and for students, it is a relatively cheap place for them to buy their foods. However, I much prefer to shop at the larger Worldwide store at the other end of the Curry Mile and also the usual LIDL/Tesco combination for students in the Whitworth Park area.

Meezan is to the Platt Fields end of the Curry Mile what Worldwide is to the Whitworth Park end. Both these places are large ethnic or halal or Indo-Pak supermarkets with similar stock. All the basics are here — grains, pulses, spices, exotic fruit & veg, great value bunches of fresh herbs. Meezan is as good as Worldwide. Worldwide has a slightly more extensive range of exotic fruit & veg. On the dry goods front, I ended up buying ‘Cofresh’ brand poppadums from Meezan on the basis of the packaging being more modern and the poppadums more ‘raw’ looking — available in black pepper and cumin flavours. One major reason for shopping Meezan is that although it is busy enough to ensure a good turnover of stock, the aisles at Meezan are three, four times as wide as those at Worldwide. Meanwhile, Worldwide is ten times as busy as Meezan — I’ll let you do the maths on how much more tranquil Meezan is. If it is ethnic hustle and bustle you want, then Worldwide could be your place — personally, I’m leaning towards Meezan.

Like the dwarfed version of worldwide(down the road) and somerfields love child Meezan is the alternative for those south of the curry mile. This supermarket has a big mix of everything you could want, additionally all those funky foodstuffs of worldwide are up for grabs as well. Meezan has the world’s biggest butchers section at the back and you need a strong stomach to be able to stand around there for more than 5 minutes. As well as the single largest glass isle of meats they’ve got a ridiculously larger amount of frozen foods, holding all those starters you seem to get in a lot of the curry houses.

Can’t give this place less than four stars. There’s absolutely no logical justification for that other than its a quirky ethnic supermarket that makes me smile by seemingly stocking the entirety of India and Pakistan’s cultural dishes. Like many of these places, there is a ridiculous amount on offer for the size of the premises, and all at reasonable[?] prices. I rarely buy anything from shops like this, but I like to walk in and imagine I’m on holiday far away from the grey and browns of Manchester in winter. It works up until you accidentally catch site of the cluttered mess of Oxford Road outside.

Meezan Supermarket. Looks like its going to have exactly none of the things you need inside it. And you were right, it doesn’t. But it does have loads of other things you don’t need, but definitely want! For example, huge 2kg bags of Bombay mix! But not just normal Bombay Mix! Everyone knows that the only bad thing about Bombay mix is that you have to pick out the bits that you want, and unless you find your perfect Bombay mix consuming partner who likes all the bits you don’t, this inevitably results in the good bits getting snapped up, and the remaining pieces being left to make a conglomeration of misery. Not at Meezan! All the ingredients are available separately. If, like me, it’s the THINSEV that you like(these are the long thin dried noodley strips) then just get 2kgs of them! Perhaps you like, FATSEV, no problem! Or is BHAVNAGARI your thing?(this is crunchy thin oblong ones). Perhaps you’re a huge fan of CHANADAL(the little round crunchy ones), or WASABIPEAS(the spicy ones). No Bombay preference leaves Mr. Meezan stumped! Whatever your Bombay desires, Meezan can supply! You can even buy mixtures which exclude the bits you don’t like, genius! Also, cans of Rubicon juice for 30p.
