I was a customer of Leeds Building Society(as it is now called) for over 7 years. For most of that time(as I was not touching my money) I found their products and rates very favourable. However, when I became interested intrying to get more from my money I found their advice unhelpful. Often I seemed to know more about how to get the best out of thei rproducts than they did, and instead of them giving me advice I was usually left pointing out how best to use their own products. When I moved away from Manchester to the Isle of Man I found it increasingly difficult to get good advice. I asked which product to put my money in and they recommended and opened an ISA for me, only to close it without telling me when they realised that as an off-shore resident I was not allowed to have a tax free ISA. I wrote several letter to them complaining about service and never received any compensation or sincere apology. I have now taken my money out and won’t be using them again. I ffeel bad about this as I would prefer to use local building societies than banks but they just could not offer me the service I expected. However, on the plus side they do usually give you a bottle of wine for applying for a credit card!
