This H&M is bizarrely the opposite to most of the chain’s stores, which are often a mass of hangers, unfolded jumpers and mixed up clothes rails. Here, order is the magic word. This store is almost like an H&M boutique. The men’s section upstairs is where I spend most of my H&M time. Unfortunately, shopping at H&M for me involves trawling through a lot of stuff that I really don’t want to find the one or two items that I really like. But with the limited stock that this store carries, it makes things much, much harder. To be honest, the H&M on Market Street is probably the place to go. True, it’s busy as hell and has massive queues at peak times, but there’s a massive men’s section and much more chance you’ll find something you’ll actually want.

I know it’s too much expecting a corporate chain to ensure each of their shops had character and ambience but this particular branch of H&M is unbelievably soul-less. The white walls and floor make the floor look empty however much stock there is and the lights remind me of bad office blocks. The staff usually look more miserable than the customers and to add insult to injury, they never seem to have good music playing. Avoid and check out H&M’s original Manchester store on Market Street instead.

How apt that the letters H and M add up to create a sound used to show disappointment and disapproval because compared to the fine effort over on Market street this store is a real let down. H&M relies entirely on its huge range to beat customers into retail therapy bewilderment and hand over their credit cards. The problem here is that the store just isn’t big enough to house the full range of stock and as such the lack of genuine quality really shows. It seems a real wasted opportunity to me as H&M do actually have a pricier range of clothing that they get guest designers in to create, just concentrating on this whilst giving the store its own look would have given it a more boutique feel and probably upped the status of H&M as a whole in the eyes of today’s fashion conscious crowd. Oh well, hopefully H reads Unilocal as you know what that M is like!

This shop is well managed and well laid out. Many of the H&Ms I have been to look not dissimilar to a jumble sale so this was a nice surprise. H&M offer great value for money and unlike Primark down the road this does not equate to throwaway clothes– I have a jacket from H&M that I still have from five years ago that is in pretty good nick. Great location and really friendly staff that obviously work hard to keep the shop tidy and well run.
