I try to only review great places so you should know where this is going :-) I’ve passed this lovely place so many times assuming it was a ‘pub that does food’, but actually it’s possibly a restaurant that does beer ??! Let me give you some examples. Halloumi is Halloumi right ? Wrong it tasted better than ever beautifully golden soft and rich. Must have also been a ‘good brand’ of Halloumi. Squids squid … right ? Wrong, Fresh and thickly cut and just fried red hot to perfection in a light home batter = beautiful. Chicken strips are chicken … Etc you know what’s coming now huh !? Moist tender thick cut strips of very fresh chicken breast all with a garlic mayo and a chilli dip. Already my compliments to the chef or chefs. So on to Sunday roast beef dinner. Massive home made Yorkshire beautifully fluffy golden roasties fresh carrots cabbage and runner beans side, a pig in a blanket, and just the right amount of beef to make you feel stuffed :-) we did … Ironically the perfectly acceptable but average cappuccino was the only downside to the whole day because everything else was ‘above’ standard. But the most impressive thing about English lounge is something you can’t make or design. It’s got a ‘je né sais quois’ a ‘Feng Shui’ a something elusive that makes it incredibly relaxing and soothing. We spent hours there unhurried, and attended to gently by the friendly staff. We listened to the perfect background music and we left feeling we could easily have spent all day and night there! And that’s something you can’t create … Right ? Wrong !!! Lol congratulations to the management, staff, and kitchen of the English lounge … Superb !

I usually end up here on work lunches so have been here pretty regularly. It is well presented in an atmosphere that harkened back to the pubs of my childhood, shunning the current modernisation or de-modernisation(as demonstrated by some quirky places like Takk coffee house) of most eateries in the city. The menus can be a little selective and when you get a basic meal it does feel basic for the price… Such as a basic burger for near £10 that’s about the same quality of a spoons burger that will set you back a fair bit less with a drink. The fancier side of the menus however is delicious. I had wild boar chops here and they where delicious! All in all, a very pleasant place for a group or a meet up with a mate or two but not one for anything romantic or epic.
